Consultation – improving the access from Braystan Gardens

Residents on Braystan Gardens on Gatley’s South Park Road estate have, very reasonably, complained about the problems they have leaving their road and turning onto Kingsway.
The Council have come up with an initial suggestion which might help. Obviously this isn’t about fixing the wider issue of vehicles using the estate illegally to get onto Kingsway northbound; it’s just about seeing if we can do something relatively cheap and easy to help with this specific issue.

Under this plan, residents of Braystan Gardens would have right of way onto Kingsway, with a “Keep Clear” box to stop their exit becoming blocked.
If you live on the estate, Pam and I would like to know what you think. In particular, if there are problems with the solution, we’d like to spot them early and perhaps figure out a way round them before it goes to a proper consultation.

Hi Iain, Would this involve any physical changes to the roads and pavements around the junction of Brayston with Kingsway? I am surprised that this keep clear box is being considered, bearing in mind the reasons given by the appropriate authorities concerning the right-turn problems of traffic coming from Cheadle (gatley road) and turning onto kingsway?

Hi Kath, this option would only involve painting a keep clear box and a new give way line.
Could you expand on the issue you see regarding the right-turn from Cheadle – they don’t seem to be the same issue to me, but I may well be missing something.

You are correct it does not deal with the wider issue and I would like to make a point on this first. We had understood from previous e-mails that in terms of enforcement the Police would start with warnings but then move quickly on to fixed fines. There has been no evidence of this at all.
However the proposed solution to the Braystan Gardens issue does appear a sensible way forward. It is appropriate that cars coming along the service road (usually Illegally) should have to “Give Way” and the “Keep Clear” box should prevent vehicles turning left from Kingsway into the Service Road from being blocked by traffic exiting Braystan Gardens.

Pam and I have consulted with local residents and got the Council to do what it can, which includes improving the lines and signage along the Kingsway service road.
You’re right that this alone isn’t going to solve the problem. The other issues you mention are ones the police need to enforce.
Pam and I can’t, of course, tell the police what to do but we do work closely with them and we are asking them to build on the work they did last year when several hundred warnings were handed out to drivers illegally using the estate.
