Gatley Carrs getting a make-over

by Lib Dem team on 18 February, 2011

The Gatley Carrs Conservation Group are working to improve the biodiversity of Gatley Carrs pond as large areas have silted up and open water has been lost. (Unfortunately the last time the pond was dug it wasn’t dug deep enough and the Great Reed Mace flourished).

The GCCG have worked very hard to raise money for the improvements from a variety of funding sources.

The project aims to remove as much of the silt at the pond edge as possible in order to increase the volume of open water which will increase the opportunity for pond life, such as amphibians, dragonflies, birds and bats.

It is hoped that when completed the local community and other visitors will become more actively involved in management and habitat of the site. We will have an improved viewing area, which could provide interest for everyone.

Gatley Carrs conservation Group are grateful for money provided by Viridor-Credits, Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund, The Horace Dudley Trust (Gatley URChurch) and await a decision by local councillors on funding from the Shiers Family Trust.

Taylors of Chorley will start work on the 28th February and initial work will take approximately 2-3 weeks. After that we are hoping for volunteers to help on Task Days helping to clear the site – more details of this will be posted round the Carrs. The Carrs will be in a state of unheaval for a few months but we know from previous projects that nature fights back very quickly!

I really appreciate the work the group does though I haven’t been able to contribute myself. Has the group ever thought of having people make regular direct debit donations like the charities do as well as or instead of the annual membership? I’d be willing to contribute on this basis.

    – turn down Old Hall Road by the Horse and Farrier pub
    – turn left at the bottom and keep left, along Brookside Road
    – at the end of Brookside Road there’s a car park and the Carrs
