Stockport 2012/13 budget proposals published – and other Executive items

by Lib Dem team on 1 September, 2011

The Lib Dem’s initial budget proposals for 2012/13 have been published, as the start of a three month consultation.

The agenda for next Monday’s Executive meeting (open to all, come to Stockport Town Hall, 6pm on Monday) has all the information.

It includes various different items, some budget related and others not:

  • Proposal to set up a new Community Hub at Woodbank Nursery where community organisations can come and work together.
  • HCA Affordable Homes Framework
  • Medium Term Financial Plan (this sets out where the Council is now financially, and the savings we need to make over the next few years).
  • Executive proposals for saving £13 million in 2012/13
  • Proposals to move from the current four-week meeting cycle to a six-week meeting cycle from next year.

The Council is in a slightly better financial situation that we might have feared – the work we’ve done over the last year has paid off.  Along with the Transformation project, that means we believe we’re able to balance the budget without making the sorts of cuts that many other councils across the country are doing.

For example, we are not proposing to close any libraries, nor to do any less repairing of roads and pavements, nor to cut back on our excellent district centre stewards.

I could not find any specific reference to what the rulling lib dem group intend to do about any council tax increases for next year.

The last thing we want after the large increases over the last 10 years is any increase in this tax next year – many of us are getting no increase in income and some unfortunately major reductions.

So what is the policy? Is it a frozen council tax or an increase and if so by what %?

This must be known as council tax receipts are a critical part of the balanced budget referred to.
