Cheadle MP Mark Hunter has welcomed today’s announcement that the Government has agreed significant extensions to trains on the West Coast Mainline, which runs through Stockport.
Between April and December 2012, there will be a near 50% increase in the number of standard class seats between Edinburgh and London from 320 to 470, achieved by adding additional carriages to 31 trains. A total of 106 new carriages will be added to the line, meaning 28,000 extra seats available each day.
The majority of West Coast Mainline trains make a stop at Stockport and this extension will dramatically improve access to the town and surrounding areas.
Commenting, Mark said:
“This is clearly great news for people across our area, and it will contribute to the growth of our local economy in these tough economic times.
“The extension will ease passenger overcrowding, strengthen Stockport’s position on the business map, and make the Borough an even more attractive place to work and live.
“The announcement is a welcome boost for Stockport, and I am very pleased that the Coalition Government and Virgin Trains have agreed this plan.
“A frequent user of this service myself, I know how hard it can be to get a seat on the train at peak times and this will undoubtedly be welcome news to many rail users.”
