Stockport local development framework – travellers’ sites, takeaways and greenbelt

by Lib Dem team on 23 November, 2011

At Cheadle Area Committee we spent over two and a half hours discussing the proposed Allocations Development Plan for the Local Development Framework: looking at what sorts of development we want to see in different areas around Cheadle, Gatley, Heald Green and Cheadle Hulme.

There’s a lot of detail I could go into, but most readers would be asleep pretty quickly so if you want to know about the sort of employment we want to see on Cheadle Royal, the extent of primary frontages in Cheadle and Gatley or any other issue, then do get in touch and I’ll be more than happy to bring you up to date.

There were three issues which I think are important to a lot of residents.

Travellers’ sites

It was confirmed at the meeting that the Conservative claim – that 7 travellers’ sites are being proposed for our area – was simply untrue.  No sites are being proposed. Those at the meeting now know that, but we are worried that hundreds of people who received the leaflet may well still be worried by the false claim and we’ll continue working to put the record straight.

The councillors felt that the sites the Council had put forward for consideration would either be unsuitable for travellers’ sites, or have other possible uses – such as housing – which would be preferable.

Take-aways

Pam and I were clear on the issue of hot food take-aways: we have enough in Cheadle and Gatley and we want to be able to prevent new ones opening in the centres on that basis.

Green belt

Councillors were asked to consider whether we would permit development on the greenbelt – in particular the area of greenbelt to the south of Heald Green.  Our answer was a firm “no” – we believe the greenbelt needs to be protected.

I was surprised to read that there are enough hot food takeaways in Cheadle. I am aware of those in Gatley and near Councillot Lane but there are very few in the centre of Cheadle village. The two Chinese takeaways are associated with restaurants, as is the single Indian takeaway (the Raja). I was extremely sorry to see the Ishaaq cease trading a few months ago. It was my favourite and had a distinctive range of food that was rather different from most other Indian takeaways. It was well-run, did not seem to attract the rowdy element of after-pub curry eaters and is sorely missed by the connoisseurs. Should there be plans to resurrect this business, I hope that they will be considered sympathetically by those who give permission for such enterprises.

Great, you are against more takeaways in Gatley, so are a lot of the residents. The problem is no matter how much we object they still get the go ahead, as the latest one has. Residents concerns do not seem to count.

The new planning rules will give us the power to stop new takeaways.

You rightly say that at the moment the planning rules do allow them to squeeze through in some cases; but that’s exactly why it’s so important to get the new rules right, and that’s what we’re doing.

Stuart, are you not aware of the row of takeaways on Wilmslow Road adjacent to the post office? and the chip shop opposite. There are far too many takeaways in the area in general, serving up salt/fat laden unhealthy (food).Whats wrong with a good home cooked meal or snack. many which can be soon be rustled up in a hurry or if you can’t cook/won’t cook, eat in, and help to save on waste packaging
