As we reported in our recent Keeping in Touch leaflet, the Tatton site developers have now launched a formal appeal.
The proposal being appealed is to have a large convenience store in the cinema building, limited parking at the front and a care home at the rear. This was rejected by councillors back in the spring.
To quote from the letter being sent out to local residents:
The appeals to be decided at Informal Hearing to be heard by an Inspector appointed by the First Secretary of State. I will inform you of the date and venue in due course.
Any comments that you made to the Council at the application stage will be sent to the Planning Inspectorate and taken into account before he or she reaches their decision.
If you wish to make any additional comments you may do so by sending 3 copies to The Planning Inspectorate, Room 3/18A, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol, BS1 6PN within 6 weeks from 09/12/2009. I wish to add my concerns to the proposal to use the Tatton Buildings in Gatley as a convenience store and care home. This proposal seeks to provide the village with two things that it already has plenty of while neglecting to provide what it really needs, which is parkling spaces so that people can use the resources that are already in place.
Firstly we have 2 co-operative convenience stores and several other food shops in the Village, we do not need any more. More competition will not improve quality it will merely increase traffic. Local small businesses are already suffering because people have very few places to park if they need to buy a lot of things, this almost forces people to go to the likes of Tesco and Sainsburys for the week’s shopping because they have car parks.
Another convenience store wont help local people who like to shop locally, it will just add pressure to the butchers, grocers, bakers etc who probably wont be able to compete in price because of the buying power of a large trader. I am not a local trader but I value those who are and want to see them thrive not be forced out of business due to overcrowding.
Secondly we already have several very good care homes in Gatley. I have no connection to any of them so am unbiased in my view that an additional home will directly affect their business without adding to Gatley in any way.
Moreover the current proposal will see increased traffic brought into an already overcrowded village adding to congestion.
