Lib Dems fight Barclays branch closure in Gatley

by Lib Dem team on 18 May, 2015

More than 350 people have signed Keith’s petition asking Barclays to think again about closing the last bank in Gatley in just a few days. Please join Keith’s campaign.

The Lib Dem team has been shocked to discover that Barclays have taken the decision to close their Gatley branch – the last bank in the village. Barclays say they will close down the branch on Friday 21st August 2015.

The branch is in a key location in the village and, while there are other branches in Cheadle, Didsbury and Stockport, none are easy to get to on foot and all require you to get through the busy Kingsway junction. Closure of the branch would also see the loss of the cash machine – the only one at that end of the village. Although the Post Office can be used for very basic transactions, it’s more complicated (for example, you need to send off to Barclays for paying-in slips which haven’t been used at the bank for some time) and there’s less you can do there.

Cllr Keith Holloway said “This news has come out of the blue. Barclays have made no effort to consult with residents or with councillors, they’ve just announced it. To rub salt into the wound, the back of the letter talks about their ‘commitment to face-to-face banking’.  We don’t think this is acceptable and we are challenging Barclays to look again.”

Please help us by signing Keith’s petition asking Barclays to take another look and reconsider closing the branch.

I use this branch on a regular basis and would be very sorry to see it go we cannot afford to see our only bank close it will be another amenity gone in gatley

  2. Bob Condren says:

I think it is really upsetting, I have been a Barclay’s customer at the Gatley branch for the last 33 years, from the age of 17. We need to also think of the elderly people, that use Gatley on a daily basis and the Bank is part of the life blood that keeps the village going.

  3. phil says:

An absolute disgrace and I feel sorry for all the elderly in Gatley. They say everyone is now banking on line, have they not spoken to the older generation – some of who don’t even use a computer. Sounds like another curry house for Gatley but where you draw the money from to pay.

  4. Anne-Marie Morris says:

I was deeply disappointed to hear of Barclays Bank Closing. I have used this bank for over 30 years and have always had excellent service. I know we can use the Cheadle Branch but to be honest I think this will be following in the Gatley branches footsteps. Please reconsider, there are a llot of elderly residents in Gatley who will now be in a quandary about there banking situation.

  5. John Ellis says:

It would be sad to see Gatley’s last bank go, but if barclays do go through with this closure, the council should do something to encourage a good independant business to replace it.

  6. Ken says:

Disgusting – their hypocrisy, but that said, I feared this was coming after having visited that empty bank on several occasions.
Being a pensioner I can always travel free to their Cheadle branch, but that said, it be just so much inconvenience.
I speak as a former Barclays (based elsewhere ‘behind the scenes’) employee !

  7. gb says:

What would be really useful in Gatley would be a building housing ATMs for all the banks – thus saving trips to Stockport!

  8. sophie says:

Please do not let the old Barclays building be a hair dressers, curry house or supermarket !!! count the number of these shops and you ll realize its ridiculous !!!

    • Iain Roberts says:

      Hi Sophie,

Unfortunately, planning law gives us very little power to decide what type of business goes into a building. We may not even know about it until they move in, but we’ll keep a close eye and do what we can.
