New coffee shop proposed for Gatley Green

by Lib Dem team on 5 November, 2010

A planning application has been received by the Council to turn 80 Church Road (most recently “Flowers by Design”, next to the temporary fireworks shop at Gatley Green) into a coffee shop.

You can see the application on the Council website, though it looks like not all the documentation is yet online.

Better that than fireworks ! But, what with the two established cafes across the green, who needs another such ?

  2. John Hartley says:

You have to wonder how there’s going to be enough business to go round for four cafe outlets. But then that’s your capitalism, innit?

Indeed – I wouldn’t want to stop someone opening a business on the grounds that I don’t think it will be commercially successful: firstly, what would I know; and secondly it’s their lookout and good luck to them.

Will be nice to have a proper coffee shop to meet up in rather than the local cafe type greasy spoons. I hope they do nice handmade chocolates! Yum yum!! Good on them for taking some initiative. Let’s get Gatley back to a place to be proud of!

  5. JAFT says:

Yes, yes, yes!!! Gatley is in desperate need of a decent coffee shop that is modern and caters for the cafe culture that is so evident in Didsbury. The man above said ‘do we need another one?’ I wasn’t aware that the greasy spoons considered themselves coffee shops. Gatley has nothing to offer in the day apart from the deli and awful takeaways. If the person applying for the cafe reads this, yes I think its a brilliant idea. Make it mother/child friendly and you shouldn’t have any problems getting customers!

  6. Robert Taggart says:

re: JAFT (JAFT ? ! ) As one the residents oneself has admittedly never seen the need or had the urge to partake of any of our local ‘cafes’. Takeaways – yes – our belly will testify to that !

    Lets hope its “Costa”

I think it’s a good idea, as I consider Armenique to be the only coffee shop in Gatley, and although I love it there it will be good for the village to have a bit more choice particularly if it can specialise in Fair Trade products. I also agree with the previous comment about making it child/pushchair friendly. It would be nice to have regular events held there to encourage people to meet in the community, e.g. ‘Happy Hour’ special offers for cake & coffee, ‘guest’ coffees, small play area with books and quiet toys for toddlers etc.

Interesting to see they are trading without planning permission.
