Parking enforcement in Cheadle – again!

by Lib Dem team on 8 February, 2010

Pam and I have been wrestling with the issue of parking enforcement, especially in Cheadle, where most the complaints arise.

I’ll write more about it when I’ve time, but for now I’m pleased to report a boost for this week with two parking attendents spending the week in Cheadle village centre.

This is not a permanent measure – we’re all looking for longer-term fixes – but we’re hoping it will make a difference.

Any more info on parking at the bottom of Oak Road? It’s a nightmare to drive to and from work due to it effectively being a one-way street at rush hours. There was talk of there being a time limit of say 2hrs at the bottom of Oak Road, but I still don’t see how that is going to help things.

It got delayed by both the bad weather and a key person being ill at the town hall, much to my frustration. I’m told the work orders have gone in, so the changes should be implemented shortly.

Also glad to see traffic enforcement in Cheadle.
Thursday morning 8 vehicles parked in the High Street, 11 on the double lines at the junction of Ashfield Road so I went in search of the enforcement officer.
I knew two enforcement officers had been allocated to Cheadle for two weeks as I met Councillor Goddard at the opening of our offices at St Christopher House on Monday Morning. He told me Cheadle was going to be blitzed. Great!
I found one enforcement officer coming out of the Eden Place car park and making off round the back of Mary Street to the car park at the side of the Church.
I politely requested he walk the High Street way round as he could book at least 8 offenders on the High Street alone.
He headed towards the High Street, but I do wonder if it is less stressful to put a ticket on a car left in a car park than tackle a motorist in or near a car on the High Street or surrounding roads.
I would be interested to know how many cars have been booked on the High Street , Ashfield Road and other side streets compared to booking people on the car parks.
The figures should show a great number on the streets initially and then as the two weeks go on and people are aware of enforcement the figures should reduce.
No doubt people try to evade parking fees, but the immediate problem is congestion on the streets, so surely this is what should be blitzed.
I appreciate your attention to this problem Cheadle has and cannot stress enough it has to be sorted before Cheadle grinds to a halt.

Good to see the presence of more enforcement officers this week – though this should to be the norm rather than the exception. Having said that and as pointed out in the previous response, some of the officers seem almost scared to tackle the illegal parking that causes the most inconvenience and when they do it appears to be in the form of a polite request to move on, I thought that the softly-softly approach had been replaced with a near ‘zero-tolerance’ policy? Instead they prefer to meander through the car-parks looking for ‘easy prey’ knowing that a confrontation would be less likely. Surely this is an issue for their Managers to address, I’m sure that if you had someone with a vested interest in the area on patrol the outcome would be very different indeed!
I do appreciate that efforts are being made by yourself and others and yes, dealing with what is arguably a part-time council must be frustrating.

The new Turqoise restaurant owner thinks he can park all day outside his place along with another 3 cars, i park outside mine to unload & get told to move on or i will get a ticket!!! he’s been parked there for 6 hrs some days. NO TICKET!!! WHY

Nice to see a new business in Cheadle but have the council agreed that the High Street is now Turqoise car park. I counted six cars outside, does that mean next time i go shopping in Cheadle I also can park on the High Street. Can we please see some firm action to remove these cars who think that they are above the law

The X5 BMW has been parked on Cheadle High Street since 9.20am it is now 1.30pm . where are the traffic enforcement officers?
Why is the owner of the Turqoise resturant allowed to park all day on Cheadle High Street, could it be that the enforcement team enjoy the odd cup of tea at this establishment?

  8. Bob says:

Could also do with parking enforcement on Shiers Drive Cheadle next to the swimming baths, as drivers think that it is ok to park on the foot paths thus blocking them, this happens most days seven days a week, mostly from about early evening and weekend mornings.
