From the Council:
Borough residents have embraced Stockport Council’s new improved recycling collection service. Since the blue and brown bins were introduced over six months ago recycling rates have been boosted and are now over 40%.
The Council would like to remind residents to place cardboard drinks cartons such as long life milk and fruit juice cartons in the blue wheelie bin with other cardboard and paper. If these items are placed in the brown wheelie bin it causes a problem when the material is taken for recycling. The cartons would be classed as contamination and could potentially result in a wagon load of recycling being sent to landfill.
If any residents are unsure of what goes in what bin, they can get a leaflet from the Council website www.stockport.gov.uk/waste or by calling Stockport Direct on 0161 217 6111.

This is a great example of “if you offer it they will recycle”. I support your effort to help increase the education of the community. we have made a good start in recycling but when the robots arrive we will do even better.
Why are we still throwing so much plastic, with recyclable markings on them I might add, in the refuge bin. I understand they are classed as low grade plastic, but why mark them recylable if they can not be recycled. Surely this confuses people and causes all kinds of mix ups. Is it simply a case of Stockport not being able to meet government and industry standards when it comes to recyling?
I wish the council would collect food waste, even if only compostable. They used to and other councils do. I don’t generate enough to compost it successfully myself.
Carolyn – it’s something the Council is actively looking into and has advanced plans for, though it does cost more than the current waste collection so I can’t say for sure that it won’t be affected by the savings we’re all having to make.
