Cheadle village is set, we hope, for shorter queues as an upgraded “Scoot system” is implemented sometime in the next year.
This uses a computer to link together the three sets of lights along Cheadle High Street (the junction with Wilmslow Road, the pedestrian crossing and the junction with Manchester Road and Stockport Road).
The system then monitors traffic flows and optimises the traffic light changes to get traffic moving as fast as possible.
As the Scoot website explains:
SCOOT is the world’s leading adaptive traffic control system.
It coordinates the operation of all the traffic signals in an area to give good progression to vehicles through the network.
Whilst coordinating all the signals, it responds intelligently and continuously as traffic flow changes and fluctuates throughout the day. It removes the dependence of less sophisticated systems on signal plans, which have to be expensively updated.

Could i make a further suggestion to improve the taffic flow through Cheadle village. Remove all the vehicles which continue to blantantly flaunt the traffic parking regulations. Earlier this week I counted seven vehicles parked illegally, most on the road near Barclays bank.
You’re right Phil – parking enforcement is an ongoing battle we’re working hard on, but we’re not yet where we want to be.
We keep debating this, but until we have a full time (or almost) warden, they are still going to flaunt the system. Its 30p for Gods sake!!
Alan – the debate isn’t whether a full-time warden is a good idea (it is) but how that person gets paid for. There’s ongoing work to move nearer to having a full-time warden, but it will take time.
