This weekend we took 15 Cubs and 5 leaders to Chamboree, a big once-every-four-years Cheshire camp at the county showground near Knutsford.
I was never in the scouting movement as a kid so I’ve never really known what to expect from camps. I started helping out at Beaver Scouts because my children were going and now help out at 1st Gatley Cubs as an Assistant Leader.
In total there were over 4,000 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and leaders on the site on Sunday afternoon. The Beavers were there for the day, the Cubs for the weekend and the Scouts and Explorers for the whole week. Most were from Cheshire but we had visitors from as far afield as South Africa, Sierra Leone, Sweden and Germany.
The Cubs get a flavour of what’s on offer over their two days (Scouts have five days to cover the activities the Cubs do in one). Among the activities our Cubs enjoyed were
There’s a fair bit more I can’t remember, plus lots of extra for the Scouts and Explorers (on the Sunday, Explorers were off at CSI crime skills day in the woods, with the help of Cheshire police).
On the Sunday afternoon, we watched a medieval jousting display and then broke the world record for the most people playing the wobble-board (yes, I’ve dreamed of that moment all my life).
Taking the Cubs camping has to be one of the most exhausting experiences of my life – and this is just the second time I’ve done it. At some point, if I can summon the energy, I’ll post a bit more about what it’s all like as a leader (especially for someone like me who isn’t really into camping or that outdoors stuff).
Meanwhile, the Scouts and Explorers are there to Friday – I’m sure they’re having a great time.

I am a Beaver Leader in Northwich. Camped with cubs over the weekend, had my Beavers (17 of them) on the Sunday then worked as staff on the Urban Zone for the rest of the week. It was a great camp. My daughter was there as a Scout and my son is in the Explorers, they both also enjoyed the activities very much.
