From Stockport Council:
Stockport Council has issued a warning about a Council tax scam after a resident was nearly conned out of £97. On Friday 10th September, the resident was phoned by a man offering savings of £600-700 on his Council Tax banding by having the property re-surveyed. The survey would cost £97 and the resident provided their debit card details.
However the man’s alert neighbour – who contacted the Council – advised the resident to contact their bank and cancel their card. The resident checked the caller’s telephone number and it began with 0905 – a premium rate number.
Stockport Council has issued a press release explaining that it wouldn’t cold call in this way and if people have any queries about their Council Tax or wish to report suspicious calls, they should telephone the helpline number -0161 217 6014. Anyone with information about the scam such as a name, phone number or address of the person or business making the calls to households are asked to contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506

Were Council Tax not so exorbitant in the first place – there would be no ‘market’ for such shysters !
Were council tax much lower, council’s wouldn’t be able to provide the services residents tell us they want.
But some of us do not want the ‘services’ this council provides !… 4 wheelie bins for starters.
Also the ‘scam’ of 3 councillors per constituency !
The 4 wheelie bins will save money (millions, in fact), and the 3 councillors isn’t a “scam” but a legal requirement set down when the metropolitan authorities were created in 1974.
You’re right though – not everyone uses all 620 services the Council provides, such as those for elderly people, children in foster care or with special educational needs. I believe that it’s very important that those services are provided all the same.
