From Stockport Council:
Stockport Council’s Dog Warden Service and Civil Resilience Unit both won Gold ‘Stray Dog Footprint’ awards from the RSPCA. The award is part of the national charity’s Community Animal Welfare Footprint scheme which encourages local councils to consider animal welfare in providing services.
It is the first time that the Council had entered the scheme which is supported by the Trading Standards Institute and Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. The Dog Warden Service, which has two dog wardens, complied with all the criteria set by the RSPCA. Evidence was submitted to show that the service recognises the importance of animal welfare in stray dog provision including procedures and protocols for responding to stray dog reports, actively promotes different schemes and events to reduce the number of stray dogs, and regularly promotes responsible dog ownership.
The Dog Warden Service responds to around 600 stray dog reports every year as well as reports of dog fouling, dangerous dogs and requests for microchipping and re-homing of unwanted dogs.
The Civil Resilience Unit won gold in the Contingency Planning category. The unit works closely with the RSPCA by offering training and exercising of plans to provide for the needs of evacuees with pets following incidents and emergency situations in the borough.
