Stockport’s new bin collections start today

by Lib Dem team on 1 November, 2010

The new system for bin collections start today (Monday 1st November 2010).

If you previously had your rubbish collected on a Monday (as I did) it will not be collected today.  The bin men are off collecting black wheelie bins elsewhere.

Across Cheadle and Gatley our new collection day is Wednesday.

Do not put out bin bags today or tomorrow, but do put out your  green wheelie bins on Wednesday (remember – all food, raw and cooked, goes in the green bin in the biodegradable bags you got from the Council).

Some people in Cheadle & Gatley have their first black bin collection on Wednesday 3rd November, others on Wednesday 10th November.

To get all the details on your new collection times from the Council, go here and enter your postcode.  You should also have received details through the post.

So long as the public bins beside the ‘big’ co-op on church road / gatley green remain in place one will have little ‘issue’ with this madness !

This new bin scheme is an epic failure.
Why make the black wheelie bin, which people use the most, the smallest. It’s roughly half the size of Manchesters.
Watch as bin bags litter the pavements from now on. As any bags which don’t fit in my rediculously small wheely bin will be left on the pavement and not moved until the they get taken away or.
The council environment section dosen’t even bother answering emails asking for another bin either.
The compost caddy has holes in it making it easily accessible to mice/rats, especially leaving meat and cooked foods in it. Which on most composting sites is discouraged for this reason.
Only collecting the brown bin once a month is a disgrace, just to save the council a few £s which they will waste on something else.
Why didn’t you ask what the residents wanted, whether they wanted fortnighly collections?
I wonder whether it was because they didn’t want it, so you just ploughed ahead with your eco madness of separating every little bit of garbage and putting the 50% that can’t be recycled into the toy sized black wheelie bin that we’ve got.
Whatever incompitent bafoon came up with this scheme should be removed from office immediately. As should the lib dems who have made Stockport a laughing stock.
You councillors are supposed to work for us and do what we want, instead of working in your own self interests and lining your own pockets such as your esteemed Dave Goddard who gives himself £50,000 a year, no wonder Stockport needs to find £80m of savings.

Hi Rob. I’ll try to answer your comments about the new bins.

The new scheme will save money – a lot of money – for taxpayers.

The new bin is sized to be big enough for the needs of most (certainly it’s big enough for the amount of rubbish my family of four generate) and for those who really need another, they’ll be able to get one (this is the first day of the new system, so unsurprisingly the Council’s people are a bit busy – I’m sure you’ll understand and give them a little time to respond).

We have a new facility specifically designed to take all food – cooked and raw – as well as garden waste, meaning that all that can be safely recycled. Every tonne of food we can recycle saves taxpayers £70 and is good for the environment, and with 280,000 residents of Stockport, that’s a lot of tonnes.

The monthly collection of the brown bin isn’t madness, it’s based on how often the brown bins actually need to be collected for the vast majority of residents. Mine fills up every six weeks or so, so monthly collection is absolutely fine.

Having holes in the compost caddy works pretty well – I’m certainly happy with mine, and no mice or rats but if you don’t like it, don’t use it!

These changes will mean we recycle more and it’ll save taxpayers money. You seem to have already made your mind up about the scheme before the first collection – I can only ask you give it a few weeks and see how it works.

Iain I have no problem with the new system and think the food waste bin is a great idea however the black wheelie bin is very small considering it is only emptied fortnightly.

I have 2 children in nappies and our bin was full after a week. I am unable to get through to the council by phone for the last 2 days to request another bin and my emailed enquiry form has not been answered. What do the council propose we do with additional rubbish? Will it be collected in bags or are we expected to go to the tip? The council phone line just cuts you off you can’t even wait.

  5. iainroberts says:

    Hi Cheadle mummy,

You make a good point, and I’m glad that nappies aren’t an issue for me any more.

The challenge the Council have got is to reduce the amount we’re dumping in landfill, both to save money for taxpayers (as it costs £125 to throw a tonne of rubbish in landfill and we get paid about £25 to recycle a tonne of paper or glass) and to help the environment.

If the Council gave extra black bins to everyone, there’d be little incentive to reduce waste and recycle more. That doesn’t help you much, as someone who (for a limited period, anyway) has more rubbish to go in your black bin than will fit – and reusable nappies certainly aren’t for everyone.

I’ll make enquiries and see if there’s any fast-track option (other than finding a friendly neighbour who lives alone and so doesn’t fill their black bin) but, as things stand right now, you would have to take additional waste to the tip.

  6. Chris W says:

Ok, well.. why is Stockport council misinforming it’s residents? My new black wheelie bin has a sticky label attached which very clearly states:

“Your first black wheelie bin collection will be on Thursday 11th November and then every other Thursday.

Please continue to put out your refuse on your current day until your new collection starts on Thursday 11th November.”

Our current day is Monday (near Cheadle Hulme), and guess what, they didn’t come yesterday. BUT, the label clearly indicates they would! I, along with apparently more than 50% on my neighbours put out normal bags following the ‘instructions’ on the label.

I phoned the waste dept. today and all I get is “There are no other collections, dispose of it yourself!” No apologies, no offer of a courtesy collection for misleading residents, just a heavy handed – NO.

I’m disgusted, and although I will comply with the new scheme from now on (as if I had a choice).. I would not have continued to use normal bin bags for the past week (which I now don’t know how to get rid of) if I had known the truth.

If the labels were to be followed there would also be a normal bag collection next Monday. I just hope the council does the decent thing, acknowledges their mistake, and comes round to clear-up all the rotting bags lying on the pavements (and warns residents when this will happen first)!

  7. Les Leckie says:

Is it within the rules of the new system to put food waste directly into the green bin without using the bags provided? I hope so.

I think the new system has much merit and would like to know how people manage to fill their black bin with uncyclable waste within two weeks. I have some sympathy with the users of disposable nappies, particularly where there is more than one child. But, that a part, just what are people throwing out that’s so bulky?

  8. iainroberts says:

Les – yes, it’s fine to put food in without a bag, but bear in mind that you’re responsible for cleaning your own bin.
