Sainsburys at Cheadle Royal is looking to expand and they’re consulting local residents before putting in a planning application sometime in the next few months.
The main changes are
My main concern at this stage is how much additional traffic this will drive to the site and, therefore, what the effect will be on the roads around.

I have no problem with this – bring it on!
As for the traffic well I can’t see it being an issue.
I like Sainsburys.
Are we to lose the existing recycling centre? Can’t see a new one on the plan.
Hi Les – I’m told the recycling centre will be staying, in the far corner behind the petrol station.
Can a condiion be added that they actually *enforce* the restrictions in the carpark – they aren’t too bad about disabled spaces, but they have always let people get away with parking in the pick-up-and-set-down area, the carry-to-car area, on double yellow lines, in bits not designated as spaces (but people use because they are close to the store and people are lazy.
Why worry about the recycling centre with the new expanded recycling service now arranged?anyway there is still plenty of unsightly recycling centre’s around where people just leave there rubbish at theside of the containers.
Will the prices come down??? If yes . I’ll all for it, but as a Sainsbury’s shareholder, I’m probably Ok with it anyway!!
(Makes a change for me on these posts…….)
Parking on the Sainsburys-John Lewis site can already be impossible to find at busy times. I am surprised that they claim that the side car park is underused as I have found that full too from time to time. Parking should be sorted out as a condition of the expansion. Constructive proposals:
1. install digital signs which update frequently to display numbers of spaces in sub-areas of the car-park.
2. consider multi-storey parking similar to that recently installed at Stepping Hill Hospital, though multi-storey below ground parking would be visually more attractive.
3. A solution requiring commitment of revenue rather thab capital by the stores would be to reinstate and expand the bus services that used to call there. Shuttles covering about a 4 mile radius would include village centres of Western Stockport as well as East Didsbury and Wilmslow. It is a marketing & PR problem and should be well within the capabilities of the stores to solve.
Peter – as it’s their private car park, I don’t think we can make them enforce restrictions in a certain way, but we can check.
I welcome the expansion plans
If Sainsbury are going to invest a large amount of money on this development, then the Council planning committee should ask them to address the follwing two issues:
1) The lack of lighting around the store entrance and crossing areas: visibility in the dark is very poor, and should be improved.
2) The lack of pavements from the roundabout entrance to the development: there is no way to walk safely into the site from the roundabout and nearby pedestrian. crossing area.
[…] Last November, Pam and I reported that Sainsburys at Cheadle Royal is planning to expand their store. […]
Interesting one this, looking at the comments it seems clear that some people are worried by extra traffic and given the way that the A34 between Sainsbury’s and the M60 slip roads near Gatley operate those fears aren’t unfounded. However, there is considerable evidence that shows box extensions to existing stores does not result in a ‘linear’ increase in traffic flows in relation to the current store vehicle generation patterns. I would guess that this is what Sainsburys will be arguing.
