At Cheadle Area Committee this evening we were given a full update on the flooding issues at Ladybrook Road in Cheadle Hulme and the junction of Wilmslow Road and Broadway in Cheadle.
A good deal of work has been done on the ground so far. In Cheadle Hulme, all the grids have been checked, work is being done on re-levelling the pavement and remote cameras have been sent through the culvert. In Cheadle, a log was found in the culvert partially blocking it – this has now been removed.
The complication is ownership and responsibility.
These old culverted streams are not like the dedicated sewerage system. Parts are the responsibility of United Utilities. Parts come under the remit of the Council. When they pass under private land, the landowner is responsible for that section. All this is co-ordinated by the Council.
So the summary is:
[…] Kevin Melling, head of Streetscene, was grilled over the action being taken to sort out flooding on Ladybridge Road and Broadway/Wilmslow Road as I reported yesterday. […]
So, nothing has changed in over 20 years, or even 30+ years. They were arguing over exactly this when the bridge at the end of Broadway was repaired. They were arguing over this last time there was a flood in this area, over 30 years ago – the culvert got blocked and no-one took ownership. C’est la vie. But, it’s people’s lives being affected.
