The new community toilets are a very positive development, allowing Stockport to have more toilets for public use than ever before, but councillors from all sides have been concerned that we need to do more to publicise their locations. It didn’t help, of course, that the Stockport Times ran stories giving the impression that we had no toilets any more, but never mind.
Pam and I, amongst others, have been suggesting ways to get the locations better known since last year, but to be fair I’m not sure my early suggestions were that great.
In January I proposed new finger-post signs based on similar signs I’d seen in Oldham. These are small signs attached to posts, pointing people clearly to community toilets and including the name the place with the toilet.
That went through the system and I was very pleased when Cllr Stuart Bodsworth announced last Thursday that Area Committees could buy these signs for their community toilets at £70 a sign.
Pam and I have now bought three of these signs from our ward budget, to better advertise our community toilets at the Star Inn, Jacksons Supper Bar and Cheadle Library.
We think that the result will be a lot more people knowing that community toilets exist, and where they are.

Excellent news!
Looking forward to adding them to my Flickr set.
Just to let you know that the w.c at the Library has been out of action for some time. Apparently the drains collapsed. As of today, no news of any repair in hand.
Also, the Fish & Chip shop on Ashfield Road has specific opening times i.e. closed first thing in morning till just before lunch.
Hi Estelle,
There is a problem with the library toilet drains which they’re working to sort out.
Imperfect as all these things are, I guess one of the advantages of the community toilet scheme is that we have more toilets overall so one being out of action at least means we keep some service.
The old public toilet was frequently vandalised and closed, and had variable opening hours.
