Police report: arrests made in Heald Green burglaries, and more

by Lib Dem team on 22 June, 2011

Local Gatley copper Mark Shaw joined us at Cheadle Area Committee to give a report on local activity and answer any questions.

Issues raised included:

  • anti-social behaviour on Hawthorn Road and Baxter Park, Gatley – with issues flaring up at the Gatley Hill end of Hawthorn Road and on Halstead Grove.  The police are aware of these issues and working on them.
  • an attempted break-in at the new Tesco in Gatley (it failed)
  • youths gathering at the far end of Belmont Road, in the area past the new houses, and in Gatley Carrs (though of course we need to be careful – if young people are hanging around but not causing problems, that’s very different from vandalism, crime and anti-social behaviour).

PC Shaw told us that in Heald Green burglaries had doubled compared to the same period last year: from 7 to 14.  However, two arrests have been made this week and police believe this will see incidents fall.  Anti-social behaviour is down 50% in Heald Green, with vehicle crime also down.

In both Cheadle and Gatley, burglaries are static.  Anti-social behaviour is down in Gatley compared to the same period a year ago, and unchanged in Cheadle.  Vehicle crime is a little up in both.

Seven illegally-ridden off-road bikes have been seized and crushed in Cheadle.

Sainsbury’s Filling Station has seen a spate of petrol thefts – 64 cases of people filling up with petrol and then driving off without paying.  Typically, the thieves are using stolen number plates to disguise the cars.

Police plans for the next month include

  • Going back to the South Park Road Estate to do further enforcement of the “no entry except for access” rule
  • Targeting illegal parking outside primary schools
  • A presence at the Gatley and Heald Green festivals

What period of time was PC Shaw reporting on? Seven burglaries in a week would be one thing, the same over 6 months somewhat different – if you see what I mean?

Good to hear the cops will be back on the South Park and round the local schools.

Hi John, my recollection is that the figures were for a month. Heald Green has about 5,000 properties in all, to give the figure some context.
