A report on how young people are doing in our area has much good news, with a few causes for concern. You can read the full report below, but here are a few key points.
- Cheadle & Gatley ward has three primary schools (Cheadle Primary, Gatley Primary and Lum Head Primary) and one secondary school (The Kingsway). Heald Green has six primary schools (including one special school), with Cheadle Hulme North ward having four primary schools, including Meadowbank at the Cheadle end of the ward.
- Stockport’s primary schools were among the best in the country last year, as measured by the key stage 2 SATs. In the Cheadle Area our kids did better still, with a big improvement from 2009 to 2010.
- Our Cheadle area schools almost halved the achievement gap between those on free school meals and their peers (from 29.4% to 14.7% – a very impressive achievement.
- 2010 was another record-breaking year for secondary school pupils, with 66.6% in the Cheadle area getting 5 or more A*-C GCSE grades.
- Just 3% of our 16-18 year olds are not in education, employment or training (NEET)
- Obesity levels are concerning. Although our reception children are doing well (5.7% obese), by year 6 that’s up to 18.6%. However, childhood obesity is a complex issue and we should be wary of assigning easy causes or solutions.
- There are currently 14 children in care who come from the Cheadle area
