If you’ve drive down Old Hall Road in Gatley, past the Medical Centre, in the last couple of weeks you might have noticed the new signs to Gatley Carrs.
As you probably know, Gatley Carrs is our own little nature reserve, with bats, birds, ponds, a wildflower meadow and more; but many people even in Gatley don’t realise it’s there.
The Gatley Carrs Conservation Group got funding for the signs and we helped get them made up and placed. Hopefully more people will visit the Carrs as a result.

Thank you for drawing residents’ attention to the new signs. We have already noticed new people coming down to the Carrs and we are delighted.
Perhaps we’ll manage to get a sign on Gatley Road, when we we get some more money together. We have been encouraged to try to do so by this result.
The Carrs was looking lovely this afternoon – particularly the wild flower meadow. I know one isn’t supposed to pick things – but I hope the trustees won’t begrudge us the occasional blackberry while we were walking round
We volunteers welcome blackberry pickers now and sloe
pickers later in the year.
What we would really appreciate is some more members to help swell our funds then that extra sign will arrive much quicker, and also help with our Task Days.
Very glad, John, that you enjoyed your afternoon. Makes all our work seem worthwhile.
Sloes!
That’s it. We walked past them and couldnt think what they were. They can’t be far off being ready for picking as they were looking really attractive.
Best to leave them until after the first frost – which we hope is a while off yet – then you can freeze them for a day or two to help the process.
I’ve got a good recipe for sloe gin (or vodka) if you fancy a go.
