Two new planning applications have been submitted for the development of Cheadle’s George & Dragon pub by Dorbiere. Both are in the consultation phase, with a target date for the decision of some time in September.
Application 47791 and 47767 are for refurbishment and a single storey rear extension to the pub.
Whilst we won’t comment on the details of the application (they aren’t yet online anyway), it’s no secret that the Lib Dem team is very keen to see new life breathed into not only the George and Dragon but also Weavers in Cheadle and the Tatton cinema site in Gatley.

Iain, I’m with you in wanting something to happen here but i don’t know how much of “the content” can be influenced by the application process. We DO NOT (I would suggest) want a sports / cheap lager joint in these premises. What is needed is a sensitive renovation which will be appropriate to Cheadle as a village and not attract dubious factions from outside. (Same goes for the Weavers).

As there’s already planning permission for a pub at the G&G (and Weavers), I don’t think there’s any way within the planning process to say we don’t want a particular sort of pub.
However, as the G&G is a listed building in a conservation area, the Council certainly does have the power to prevent a development that would leave the building looking inappropriate.
I agree with Alan, Cheadle does not need nor WANT a SPORTS pub of this size,It’s hard going having a pub nowadays with all the local supermarkets selling CHEAP BEER & WINE Cheadle needs uplifting not DOWN GRADING!!
As for WEAVERS this pub attracted the WRONG type of people in to the Village last time it was open(pool table not a good thing) Cheadle & Gatley have a Pub watch group going which is working well it keeps the WRONG PEOPLE out of the area,Come on people support the PUB’S that are already well established in Cheadle, Times are hard for all Buisnesses lets try & keep what we have already A LOVELY village with LOVELY PUBS,
i have just looked through the latest plans for the george and dragon and cant really see a problem .it would be very difficult (if not impossible )to criticize the application based on these drawings I also looked at the initial prposals and i agree the vision for the pub was not ideal for the village Thats not to say that the first and second prposal could end up the same
We have to rely on the issue of the licence to provide a suitable pub in line with village requirements
