A number of residents have contacted the Lib Dem team with concerns about the Gothic pub. Under the previous management the pub had numerous problems with anti-social behaviour, noise and other issues.

New management are looking to re-open the pub as a wine bar, and have told us they are looking to attract wealthier customers and to avoid the problems of the past.

We want to ensure residents can have their say, and that if any new wine bar or pub does open, it is a good neighbour that doesn’t cause problems.

It is currently unclear whether the new management will have to apply for an alcohol licence. Robert Cain Brewery still have a valid licence and have the option of transferring it to the new managers. If that happens, the police will be consulted but there will not be a full licence hearing.

The Lib Dems are pressing for the brewery not to do this, so the new management have to go through the full public process, but our understanding is that this is their decision.

Whatever happens, the police will be consulted before the licence transfer is allowed, so we are passing on the concerns of residents to the police. If you let me have your concerns, I will ensure they are passed on.

In addition, there are several ways that issues can be tackled if a new pub or wine bar does open, through the Pub Watch scheme, police visits and licence reviews for example.
