The Lib Dem plan to improve the look of The Weavers

by Lib Dem team on 8 September, 2011

The local Lib Dem team are working to get The Weavers in Cheadle looking better.

It may be that a buyer is found soon and the unit opens as something new – that would be ideal.

But if that doesn’t happen, we’ve identified some money available from the Council which can be used to improve the look of vacant premises – if the owner’s willing to put in a bit themselves to match it.  We’re now working with the agents to see if we can get it sorted. We’re having to move quickly as the money’s limited and it’ll go elsewhere if we don’t.

Making this happens relies on the current owner of The Weavers agreeing to apply for this funding and put some of their own money into it, and neither is certain.

From our side, we will work to get this and, if we can’t then we’ll look for other opportunities.

With Warwick Mall being rebuilt and a planning application in for the George & Dragon, we want to see the look of The Weavers improved too, and really give Cheadle a boost.

What is being planned for the George and Dragon? A while ago I heard that it was to be a TravelLodge but have seen nothing to confirm this since.

Alistair, Iain posted a thread on this earlier, basically looks like a pub, they are expanding the available floorspace by about 50% and closing the tunnel that leads from the high street to the car park, that will be turned over to be part of the pub….

You can see the details for the George and Dragon on the Council’s planning website.

Search for applications 47767 and 47791.

The company is question is Dorbieres, which is in fact a wholesale drinks company (You occasionally see their vans on the High St) They do have one other hotel in N Manchester, but it would be a bit fanciful to call them a hotel chain. From a CAMRA perspective, we were hoping for a return to the selling of traditional cask ales rather “fighting lager” and all that has entailed for the G&D in the past, but CAMRA have not been able to ascertain what the style / target customer base will be

I would like to think my question at the Cheadle Area Meeting on 26 July (which was never replied to) had some impact on the Lib Dem team to take action.

    Hi Alan,

Yes – we did try to do something last year when there was a similar budget from the Council but the money ran out.

Thanks for the response – rumours persist that a hotel is coming though. What is the story of the flats currently being fixed up in Ashfield Road?
