Excellent news from the Council:
This weekend saw Stockport’s town centre car parks jam-packed with keen shoppers, with numbers more than doubling since last month.
On Saturday 3 September town centre retailers came together to arrange Stockport Festival, which attracted more than 40,000 visitors. And on Tuesday 6 September, Stockport was full to the brim with 39,000 shoppers celebrating the opening of the brand new 48,000 sq ft Primark, which has created 182 new jobs.
Sunday 11 September saw the one year anniversary of the popular monthly ‘Vintage Village’ event at Stockport Market, which has attracted more than 25,000 visitors since last October.
Councillor Dave Goddard, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “Attracting a well-known international brand like Primark to Stockport is a fantastic achievement. Since its opening last Tuesday, we have seen a dramatic increase in visitors and a great buzz around the
town centre.
“In just the last 12 months we’ve seen household names Gap, H&M, Deichmann Shoes and Costa Coffee open new outlets in the town centre, as well as a number of new independents. I’m confident that we can capitalise on this and work with Merseyway
Shopping Centre to continue to attract high calibre retailers to the town centre.
“We are committed to an attractive and thriving town centre for Stockport and our overall plans include developing four distinct quarters including retail, office, housing and cultural. We have taken decisive action with the purchase of Grand Central to drive that development forward to create jobs and opportunities. We will continue with this proactive approach to secure the brightest future for the rest of the town centre.”
Ben Poland, President of Stockport Chamber of Commerce, added: “Stockport has great potential and events like the excellent Vintage Village are a perfect example of what can be done. Stockport needs to differentiate to give people a reason to come to the town
centre and this means using the space we have imaginatively. We all have a challenge on our hands but we’re doing all the right things to create a Stockport town centre for the 21st century.”
Stockport is holding its monthly Farmers’ Market on Sunday 18 September, from 11.00am to 3.00pm at the historic Covered Market Hall.
