Gothic pub re-opens as Piccolo restaurant and wine bar

by Lib Dem team on 22 September, 2011

The Gothic Pub is due to re-open tomorrow (Friday 23rd September) as Piccolo Italian Restaurant and Wine Bar.

Because the previous owner had a valid alcohol licence, they were legally able to transfer it across without a full hearing.  Although both the Lib Dems and the Council pressed them not to do this, they have decided to go ahead today.

Although we wanted the public to be properly consulted, we hope that the new restaurant and wine bar are an asset to the community – we’ll be keeping a close eye on proceedings.

(Note: a local Labour activist who hasn’t followed the history of this issue has pointed out that, from reading this post alone, it’s not clear what our view is on the restaurant. For the avoidance of any doubt, we are very much in favour of another well-run restaurant in the village and wish Piccolo every success.)

Why on earth would they go for a full hearing if they don’t have too. Let’s get behind the new venture and not try to strangle it at birth

Can’t understand why anyone would want to oppose such credible restauranteurs!!! How good is it that a beautiful building isn’t being left to ruin and there isn’t a national chain taking it over. As they already own Casa Tapas in Didsbury and Knutsford, I think we should welcome these new business men in? I haven’t spoken to anyone in the village who has a single negative feeling about the place. Cant wait to sample the menu.

  3. Iain Roberts says:

The problem was that, when development started, no-one knew what it was going to be and we were worried that it would turn into another Gothic which did cause problems for local residents.

A restaurant/wine bar is much less likely to have those sorts of issues with anti-social behaviour, and we’ll be keeping an eye on things.

I heard they had a breakin and had tables and radiators stolen and it delayed the opening. Any news on this?

  5. Iain Roberts says:

I heard that too, but I’m not aware of any more information.

Although crime is generally down, crime against businesses is sharply up in our area. That’s a real cause for concern and, as we’ve reported in the last few days, something the police are working hard on.

Piccolo – ‘welcome’ to Gatley !
What be the odds that the thieves came from ‘over the border’ ? !

If people were so concerned about what the business would be, why didn’t they just ask the owners who have been present at the building every day, all day? They have taken time out to talk to every passerby and are very proud about their new project. The council would all have been delighted to hear how they have always planned to be responsible restauranteurs and then all these weeks of negative comments could have been avoided. It would be nice to hear of some positive support form the councillors instead of trying to stand in their way.

  8. Iain Roberts says:

That’s exactly what we did – and we kept people informed throughout.

  9. Lee Collins says:

This is just what Gatley needed!! A different kind of restaurant instead of a Kebab shop or another Indian Restaurant, although I must confess Gatley has some of the best Indian restaurants in the area.
Good luck to Piccolos! The old Gothic looks great.

By accident we arrived on opening night ( due to the recent burglary which delayed the original date). We were delighted to be a part of the latest regeneration of Gatley. Yes, there were opening night nerves, but attentive table service, tasty food, and a relaxing environment, made a lovely Friday evening ‘ the way to start the weekend.’

I object to the derogatory comment made above that thieves came from over the border. I am making the assumption that you mean wythenshawe. Believe it or not we are not all thieving toe rags and some of us from over the border Actually hold down full time jobs and bring our kids up to be polite respectable individuals. So before you cast aspersions from us from over the border take a look at your own kind because I heard the robbery was an inside job!

  12. Iain Roberts says:

I agree Ange – vast majority of people in Wythenshawe, as everywhere else, are decent, law-abiding and just looking to get on in life. I worked in Wythenshawe for over two years, cycled there every day and never had a hint of trouble.

Not saying that everyone in Wythenshawe is an angel – they aren’t in Cheadle & Gatley either!

  13. Mark booth says:

Does anyone have the phone number for them?

  14. Janine says:

I lived in Gatley for 17 years with my parents before moving to my own flat in Wythenshawe. There are bad and good in both places thank you very much!!! Can’t wait to try the new food at Piccolos I think it’s what Gatley needed!

  15. craig says:

you cant say they came from over the border.i have been to gatley all my life its little minded people like you that upsets things

  16. marie feargieve says:

Piccolo is fabulous. staff inteligent and courteous. prices fair. i live in bramHALL AND IT BEATS IT HANDS DOWN. I took 23 elderley people in for lunch and a great time had by all and im not easily pleased. Speak fair. gatley badly needs a bit of class and piccolo provides it, marie feargrieve

  17. sharon says:

it makes me laugh the way people cast aspersions about wythenshawe the majority of gatley residents come from wythenshawe and just because the kids live in gatley makes them no different from kids in wythenshawe
