Perhaps this year we’ll be lucky and not have another freeze, but Stockport’s ready if bad weather does arrive.
We’ve got more grit than ever before and we’ll be gritting more roads than ever before. The Council is also working with the Probation Service to get people on Community Payback to help clear our pavements.
You can see all the information on the Council website here.
But even with all that help, there’s still no way the Council can clear every road and footpath across the Borough. There’s nowhere in the world that manages that – the resources just aren’t there. We’re inviting residents to help where they can, and where it’s safe to do so, for example by clearing snow in front of your house or helping an elderly neighbour.
We’ve got some tips on the Council website for that too. A couple of years ago there were scare stories in the media about how people might be sued for clearing snow from the pavement in front of their house or shop. Those turned out to be nonsense!
If we do get snow and ice, the Council will be ready – doing more than ever before and as much as we can, working through the night and day to keep the main roads clear and safe.

Dear Iain,
As you may remember, I have been trying for a number of years now to get gritting for West Drive,Nansen Road and South Drive as all three are on a hill and both routes to Styal road are dangerous. Each year a number of vehicles (around 6 last year) have skidded uncontrollably into parked cars and hedges, mostly from Nansen road onto West Drive but more dangerously onto Styal road from South Drive. Even the police got stuck when they came out! It is only a matter of time before someone gets badly injured and having warned the council of this I would feel they may well be held accountable. Despite my queries directly with the council no solution has been offered. Last year I had no choice but to buy the grit and clear the whole hill from Nansen Road onto West Drive. This will not happen this year – a more sustainable solution has to be found!
Please, can you help.
Regards
Neville
