Schools Hill – progress on safety

by Lib Dem team on 6 December, 2011

Following a recent accident where a teenager was injured on the Schools Hill zebra crossing, the Lib Dems have been working to get improvements.

Here’s where we’re up to:

  • The zebra crossing lights have already been cleaned and turned up to maximum power to make them more visible.
  • The public consultation has been completed
  • Electronic speed signs will now be set up on Schools Hill – these have a good record of slowing down traffic.  We’ve asked for this to be done as soon as possible.
  • We don’t think the proposals for reducing parking on Schools Hill at the junction with The Downs are quite right yet.  The people living further up Schools Hill are concerned at the knock-on effect if more cars park around their houses.  There are some alternatives we’ve discussed with council officers, which Schools Hill residents will be further consulted on.

Thanks for the update. Good to see some progress- thanks…

Just a couple of issues I would like updates on please….

Can we aim for a 20mph zone on the road- most roads with schools seem to have this limit outside gates( i understand that it’s possible that all residential roads in stockport may be changing to this this limit in the future anyway??)

Can barriers be investigated for outside pedestrian gate outside school leading up to the crossing??

Thanks and keep up the good work!

    Paul

Well done. I did notice the increased brightness of the crossing poles and it is much better.

However, what about the junction at the bottom of Schools Hill?

I don’t think a 20mph speed limit is necessary on this road considering the parents of the school children turn it into a virtual car park twice a day also any barriers outside the school gates should be funded by the school themselves. It might also be an idea to have a road safety campaign in the school as when I have been walking along here I have seen a few children and parents just step into the road and onto the crossing expecting the traffic to stop for them.

    Dear Iain
You mentioned that the ‘Pelican Crossing’ had been cleaaned, in fact it is a ‘Zebra Crossing’ there is a difference.

Ironically it would be a good idea to instal a ‘Pelican Crossing’ on a straight part of the road instead on a blind bend where it is now.

It’s a Zebra crossing not a Pelican and the lights are Belisha beacons.

ALL schools should have a lower speed limit apply while children are in the vicinity. It’s sad that it’s necessary as any driver ought have sense to slow down when approaching a child even if the child is on a footway.

    Hi Trevor, Mr Murray

Re: Zebra crossing, you’re right – error corrected.

Good to see the progress, I was away during the consultation, but would like to add that the junction with Daylesford Rd needs to be improved to eliminate the blind spot – ideally replacing the hedging with a fence
