How Sky News took our photo of Gatley, with added monkey, and said it was Bournemouth

by Lib Dem team on 7 January, 2012

How did Sky News end up printing a picture of Gatley – with added monkey – and saying it was Bournemouth?

Back in 2010 a tree next to the Horse and Farrier in Gatley fell across Old Hall Road, crushing a Mini. I took a few photos and put them on the blog – you can find the post here. This is the original photo I took and published.

Sky News have been looking for photos of storm damage and they printed this one in their article. Here’s the photo Sky have published:

Not Bournemouth, but Gatley

Notice that “Tom Bomba” who sent the photo to Sky, claiming it was of Bournemouth, not only sent a photo of a tree which wouldn’t have any leaves in January, but photoshopped in part of another photo on the left which, as you can see, has a monkey in it. Sky went ahead and published it anyway.

Finally, I should add that I would never have seen it if it hadn’t been for the sharp-eyed folks at Fortean Times.

You could be cheeky and ask Sky for royalties 🙂

  2. Bryan Horstmann says:

I don’t think that it would be at all cheeky; they may have paid someone for the photo and should always check. Could ask them for a donation to a Gatley Charity.

I agree with Bryan – they shouldn’t get away with such an obvious con photo and should have used their brains as well as their eyes. Gatley charities should benefit from Sky’s incompetence.

I’ve invoiced Sky News for £50. I hope they’ll be good enough to pay and I’ll donate the money to a local charity.
