Swings removed at Gatley Rec Ground

by Lib Dem team on 12 February, 2010

The swings have been removed at the Gatley Recreation Ground.

Unfortunately, it seems they were getting regularly broken – I’m told at least in part by someone using them to train a pit bull (quite how that works, I don’t know).

Every time the swings get broken, replacing them costs money so, for now, it’s been decided to leave them out of action.

Hopefully this can be revisited in the spring.

    Iain,

This is a disappointingly passive response from you. I expected something like: “The swings at Gatley have been broken and will be replaced immediately. We are liaising with local police to increase patrols in order to catch the culprits/deter further vandalism. Please report any instances of vandalism or suspicious behaviour in the park to [person & contact details]”.

Gatley park is very popular, don’t let the children suffer because of the actions of others. And as for the money, I note work is to commence at Brookfield Rec, surely a few pounds can be found to replace the swing seats at Gatley. If not, drop me a line. I’ll find the money myself if that’s what it takes! Please pass these comments on to the Parks Officer, Richard Booker.

    regards

    Richard

Quite frankly,I find the lack of swings ridiculous. It is one of the few things an older child can go on at the park. I appreciate they get broken on occasion but this policy of removing them altogether is simply punishing the law abiding citizens of the village. I wonder why I pay my council tax when it partly funds the upkeep of recreation grounds?

    Hi Richard, Kerry

Both fair comments. This was from a brief report in a meeting and I haven’t had time to follow it up yet. I agree totally that we need to get it sorted and restore the equipment as soon as we can.

At the same time, I can understand the Council wanting to make sure the root cause of the swings being broken is sorted rather than just replace the swings to have them broken a few days later.
