Planning permission denied for restaurant, 76 Stockport Road, Cheadle

by Lib Dem team on 3 March, 2010

At Cheadle Area Committee yesterday councillors rejected an application for a small tapas restaurant at 76 Stockport Road, Cheadle.

Residents were concerned about parking, noise and smells from the restaurant.  Planning officers actually recommended rejection on a slightly different basis – that the location was outside the “district centre” (in this case, the centre of Cheadle village).

Councillors were concerned in particular that, in granting permission for a restaurant at that location, we would be giving permission not just for this venture but for any future one that might come along should it fail or close up.

The result was a rejection of the application.

I admire the aim of the two brothers in wanting to set up a small Spanish-style community restaurant, and I wish them every success in finding the right location and making a go of it.

This was application DC/043443.

This is a bad move IMO. The smell objection is totally bizarre given the fact there is the Red Lion opposite and a chinese takeaway alongside. Yet another nail in the redevelopment of Cheadle. I hope now that the council will help these people to take premises on the High St at a reduced rate – come on guys work FOR Cheadle! As to parking; well when the owner of Turquoise puts his first 30p into a Cheadle parking meter, I’ll be impressed`!!!

Sorry Iain, but equality for all!

I agree with Alan on this one and there is something fishy about the parking arrangements outside Turquoise.

Would have loved a tapas restaurant!

Considering the number of empty outlets, restaurants and pubs in Cheadle High street, anything new that is not a charity shop (which seem to always get planning permission) is highly desirable and most welcome.

For instance, I was very delighted to spot the delicatessen that opened last year in High street, but such start-ups stand at a starch contrast to the many dark and boarded up shop windows this December. It was goodhearted of some of the land owners to put in Christmas trees and decorations instead of the usual ‘For rent or sale or anything’ signs.

It says something when these admirable entrepreneurs probably found the prices a bit too high to reside in the core of the village, and the rejection of their planning permission is a sad reminder of how council members kill of any innovative spirit in the community.

Parking is always a concern, but it seems to be used as a stamp reason to throw out any regenerating idea that might pose a tiny bit of competition to the few remaining retailers and eating/drinking venues. I see few attempts from the politicians to instead suggest how parking can be improved and support the local businesses.

The reason planning officers advised rejecting the proposal, and councillors did reject it, was that the restaurant was outside the district centre. There’s a clear policy that these sorts of developments should go in the village centre, not in residential areas.

Councillors were also concerned that, were this restaurant to fail (and many do), planning permission for a restaurant was then be in place for any future purchaser.

I very much hope the brothers looking to open a Tapas restaurant are able to find a more suitable location and make a success of the venture.

I agree with Alan, I have a buisness not far from this restaurant & am not allowed to park outside my premises, What do these people not understand about the parking restrictions!! Give them a heafty fine not a WARNING, He was parked there all weekend AGAIN, One rule for EVERYBODY including TURQUOISE RESTAURANT.

I agree lower the the rates on the high street and give these two guys a chance there is plenty of parking in cheadle. Cheadle I believe could be the next didsbury some of the restaurants ie chinesse and indian need to re-furbish there premises in order to attract the rght customers what do other cheadle residents think.Jon

I must admit that it seems strange to try to set up a restaurant so far out of town when there are plenty of better spaces available in Cheadle town centre close to parking. Definitely hope that it goes ahead though – we would love to see a good tapas restaurant in Cheadle.

  8. let’s have lots of little restaurants and cafes in Cheadle. look at the lovely Ice cream parlour we have now and Turquoise, wonderful. We need to liven up Cheadle it is dead, we seem to have a majority of charity shops. Let us have a Didsbury atmosphere and enhance Cheadle.
