Stockport central library temporary closure

by Lib Dem team on 4 September, 2010

From Stockport Council:

Central Library will be partially closed from 4.00pm on Saturday 11th September and will reopen at 10.00am on Monday 20th September. The closure will allow the Information Library to be incorporated into the Lending

Library on the ground floor of the building, which will provide easier access for customers to a wider range of materials.

This is made possible by the growth in digital information and reference resources and decreasing reliance on paper and print materials. The vacated Information Library will then provide much needed additional space for the ever expanding local history collections of books, maps, newspapers and archives. The move will give customers a larger room to study in and access to more computers and scanners within the Heritage Library.

The Information and Local Heritage Libraries, which are located on 1st floor of Central Library, are also closing at 5.00pm on Wednesday 15th September. This floor will reopen at 9.00am on Thursday 23rd September as the Heritage Library.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) self service technology is also being installed. The RFID technology will free up Library Assistants’ time from the processing of routine transactions, allowing them to concentrate on the customer service aspects of their job such as helping people with reading choices and coaching customers in the use of IT skills.

During the temporary closure of Central Library customers can use other libraries across the borough which can be found by visiting www.stockport.gov.uk/libraries.
