More DIY at Stockport libraries

by Lib Dem team on 7 October, 2010

From Stockport Council:

Do it yourself is increasing in Stockport libraries as Central Library becomes the latest to use self service kiosks. The kiosks use Radio-frequency identification (RFID) self service technology to issue and return library books and other items to customers in a fast and

With staff no longer required to check books in and out, they have more time to provide advice on reading choices, give information on Council and other services, support ICT users, and interact more personally with residents to make sure they are getting the most out of their local library.

Kiosks have been installed in 11 libraries in Stockport and customer feedback has been very positive. The technology reads the items being returned or borrowed in seconds with no need to open each item. Customers say the kiosks are easy to use and like the independence it gives them.

The kiosks were supplied by Stockport-based Intellident Ltd who are keen to set up community links via the Council. They support reading activities in Stockport libraries and Merseyway, and are sponsoring ‘Mad About Books’, the annual Schools’ Book Awards.

Stockport’s Central Library has recently seen other changes with the Heritage Library moving into a larger space, and the Information Library relocating to the ground floor which was made possible by the growth in digital information and online reference resources. Online resources are available in all libraries in Stockport and via the library web pages allowing residents to access several subscription-based electronic reference resources like Encyclopedia Britannica, Oxford Online, Who’s Who. People can also join the library, renew books, view the library catalogue and place free reservations for stock.
