Stockport bin collections in the snowy weather

by Lib Dem team on 2 December, 2010

Bin collections will continue in the snowy weather.

Where it’s not possible to safely collect a bin, it will be collected at the next scheduled collection along with any excess waste.  That means if your bin isn’t collected on its normal day, put it out next time round and leave anything extra in bags by the bin.

The Council appreciate that, where a brown bin hasn’t been able to be collected, the next scheduled collection is after Christmas, so they’re looking at how to add in an additional collection before then.

So, for example, our black bin wasn’t emptied yesterday. As it hasnt been emptied today, can I now assume it isnt going to be emptied until the 15th (along with the next fortnight’s rubbish)?

    Hi John,

As things stand now, that’s correct. If the weather improves and the Council’s confident it can make extra collections (and find the resources to do it, since there aren’t crews of bin men sitting around doing nothing so an extra collection in one place could mean a missed collection somewhere else).

Managing these bins is becoming a full time job. We, the residents, play our part by getting them out and the council does not collect them. Just a bit of snow and everything stops. Its pathetic.

So what are the bin crews actually doing while they are not able to collect our bins safely? Can they not help out with some manual gritting on the bad side roads ie? Park Lodge Close.

  5. Dave Cook says:

Your not blaming the weather for this bins madness… are you ? !

  6. Bob says:

I don’t think anyone is blaming the weather for the bins madness, the new bin operation is a madness in it self, whoever throught this one up should be FIRED.

Hi Bob. You ask what the bin crews do when not collecting bins. The answer is that – yes – they are out gritting. We don’t have a team sitting around doing nothing for 350 days a year; the bin men are a key part of the gritting operation.

They can’t grit every single road in Stockport, but I think they’ve done a fantastic job of keeping all the main roads and many of the residential roads clear.

Hi Iain – are we okay to leave the contents of the blue bin out in bags on the next collection day? the blue bin collection was missed on Warren on wednesday.

What I was interested in was the green bin collection on this same day – one council chap ran ahead taking just the green food refuse bags out of everyone’s bins and he just piled them in one resident’s green bin and that ONE bin was emptied about 10 minutes later. Not so sure why then the excuse for the blue bin collection was that the lorry could not get down our road? ! Perhaps it is not as easy to cramp all the papers and cardboard from the residents of Warren in ONE bin!

    Cheers,

    Kath

  9. Bob says:

I am pleased to hear that the binmen are not just stting around, I am sure everyone would rather that there road is cleared of ice and made safe as a priority over having their bins emptied.

  10. Alistair says:

I did this with my paper collection – left it out with my (full) blue bin in a plastic bag but the plastic bag was left and the bin was emptied. The blue bin was full due to the previous collection not taking place due to the snow. My paper recycling has doubled under the current regime and as a result my blue bins fill up in the two week period. Am I supposed to have to take it to the tip myself now?
