Breast screening service – getting to Shaw Heath

by Lib Dem team on 24 February, 2011

As we’ve previously reported, there’s some confusion over the mobile breast screening service at Massie Street car park. Stockport Council have said it’s still welcome, but the NHS Trust aren’t bringing it along and are telling people that the Council won’t let them put it on the car park any more.

Pam and I are working with Mark Hunter to get this sorted – whether it’s simple confusion or whether something else is going on, I don’t know, but this does need to be resolved.

However, on a purely practical level I was concerned that one resident had cancelled a screening appointment because she’d been told it was very difficult to get to Shaw Heath for the breast screening service there.

Shaw Heath is obviously a lot less convenient to get to than Massie Street car park, but it isn’t difficult to get to. It’s immediately south of Edgeley, near to Edgeley Park and about 10 mins walk from Stockport Station.

From Cheadle and Gatley, take the number 11 bus and get off at the far end of Edgley, just before Shaw Heath roundabout. From there, it’s about five minutes walk to the centre.

I’ve marked the centre and bus stop on this Google map.

I asked the nurse. She said Cheadle car park is the only place they go tha tis not attached to a surgery. They need hookups for water and electricity, so they have used the school. They have to pay stockport council for use of presumably school as well as car parking spaces taken up by vehicle.

    Hi Denise,

I’m sure the nurse you spoke to knows more about it than I do, though we’re trying to sort it out.

The Council have told me, and the NHS Trust, that the breast screening service is welcome in the car park. No-one before has mentioned any issue with the school to me, though that would be an issue for the school’s governing body and head-teacher.
