Gatley Primary celebrates 75th anniversary

by Lib Dem team on 8 July, 2011

Gatley Primary School yesterday celebrated its 75th anniversary with a day of events and activities.

Tours of the school during the day gave parents, governors and others a flavour of the past decades (a big “thumbs up” for Mrs Lees’ colourful ’70s suit). From the 1930s when the school opened through to the present day, there was no shortage of things to do and see including quizzes, displays, song and dance and much more.

The rain more or less held off for the evening when entertainment on the playground and field included bouncy castles, karting, football, tombola, hook-a-duck and many others.

Congratulations to the pupils and staff for putting on such a memorable day – I hope at least some of the children at the school yesterday will be returning in 2036 for the centenary celebrations!

Not all the neighbours celebrate this mind…
all those dammened school-run mums !

That’s why we do a lot of work to encourage children to walk or cycle to school, and to discourage illegal parking around the school.

Quite ironic that on the day of the anniversary the council announce that the lolly pop lady will go from the Nat West crossing. I think that this is a disgraceful decision and one which has got my blood boiling. Both my sons used this crossing ( both are in their 2os) and i do remember that the lady saved me and my son from a serious accident when a car wasn’t going to stop. Surely the council can find cuts elsewhere. If they can propose several thousand pounds sponsorship for Stockport Council then surely there is some money ( i am a county fan) This decision has unfortunately switched my vote at the next elections.

    Hi Phil,

We’ve taken the decision to bring the school crossing patrols into line with national guidelines. I use the crossing with my two children every day, and it’s a junction I’m always concerned about, but with a new, modern puffin crossing in place, the evidence we have is that having a School Crossing Patrol there as well doesn’t improve safety any further.

The Council is working with schools to make sure the kids know how to use the puffin crossing, and of course we know that a lot of children also cross there outside the start and end of school so I want the crossing to be safe for everyone who crosses at any time, not just at school times.

You’ll know that many councils across the country are going further, and cutting back patrols even when they do meet the national guidelines. We’ve no plans to do that – if the crossing meets those guidelines to be kept then it stays.

It’s a shame this wasn’t better promoted beforehand, I would have loved to have seen the old place again, not been inside since i left back in 1982.

Drop by the office and see if you can make an appointment for someone to show you round.

As this was a normal school day, I can imagine it would have caused a lot of problems for safeguarding if the school had opened its doors for anyone to come along.

I agree with Iain about the crossing, and with Robert about the school run traffic. Its not just the school, its the dance group at Elm Road church also. Double parking on Elm Road is an absolute nightmare.
The children are cosseted, when the exercise in walking would do them good !

  8. Phil Johnson says:

I also would have joined the celebrations. I was at the school 1959 to 1964 – and EVERYONE walked to school.

  9. David Johnson says:

I too wish that I had known about the celebration. As a pupil from ages 4 to 11 (1938 to 45) I still remember much including our Headmistress Miss Wright, the great play area – next to open fields – and the excellent education I received. It would be a joy to revive more of those memories by a visit – if such were possible without interrupting school life, of course.

It sounds like there’s an appetite for an old boys/girls event of some sort – I’ll mention it to Miss Murray, the Head teacher.
