Cambridge Road yellow lines approved

by Lib Dem team on 25 October, 2011

Cheadle Area Committee this evening approved plans for restricted parking (no parking between 10am and 4pm) outside the houses opposite the station on Cambridge Road, Gatley.

This is because residents in those houses have had problems with their driveways being blocked so they’ve been sometimes unable to safely get in and out of their driveways.

We’re very glad that our work to get this has moved near to completion, and we’ll be keeping an eye on nearby parking.

The problem will now shift down the side roads. Last week i was unable on most days to park outside my house and on one day my drive was partially blocked. Perhaps a better idea would be to persuade the rail authorities to expand the car park. Great expanding rail services from Gatley but a lot of people use their car to get to the station and they have to park somewhere – any ideas where the cars shifted off Cambridge will go- I unfortunately know

    Hi Phil,

You’re right that these things aren’t perfect. At the moment there’s no immediate prospect of the railway car park being expanded (though I agree that would be a positive thing). It’s important that people are able to access their own driveways – if that’s causing you an ongoing problem, let me know and we can see about getting a white “H” line across your entrance for starters.

It’s an offence to block a driveway entrance, there’s a legal term for it that I can’t recall at present, which the police will often ticket an offender

  4. Iain Roberts says:

Oddly, it’s only an offence if there’s a vehicle in the driveway. It’s illegal to block someone in, but not to stop them getting in.

However, there are also often problems with people parking close up to a driveway – in a way you’d have a hard time arguing it was blocked, but still makes it very difficult for someone to maneuver in, especially if there are cars parked over the other side of the road too.

Any yellow line is good news but please please get them on Old Hall Road ( I know its my mantra) but its just getting worse and worse at the junction with Gatley Road

As a regular user trying to exit Springfield and Delamere Roads parked cars add to the dangers when entering cars turn in at high speed and cut corners. The usual moan about ignored speed limits apply of course but also the Gatley Road congestion encourages risk-taking by some to get through traffic gaps. I dont expect a Council inspired solution but I do foresee further traffic increase and congestion – seemingly encouraged by present Government policies. Do the Lib-Dems have an answer?

  7. Iain Roberts says:

    Hi David,

I won’t claim we have a neat solution.

Where we have problems with specific junctions, we can put yellow lines around the junction which is generally successful in keeping it clear.

The traffic levels on the roads are falling slightly at the moment (presumably due to the state of the economy), but that won’t go on for ever. I hope that a combination of getting the A555 relief road built and encouraging more people onto public transport, bikes and walking will reduce congestion in the long term.

Great that yellow lines are being put outside houses opposite the station but the problem exists at houses further down Cambridge Road too. Only last week we had to ask a driver not to park, only to receive a reply \We can park where we want\ only showing them we could not get our car out did they move. This happens regularly. One day this will happen without us noticing and we will be blocked in all day. How do we get the H outside our drive? Many will still ignore the H but it may help.

As someone who is directly affected by commuters parking outside my home all day, all evening and even overnight,I’d like to comment that pressure should be brought to bear on Network Rail either to provide more parking for commuters in the area (what about them leasing the landing behind the Tatton?), or outside the area and ‘busing’ commuters into the area, rather like the Park and Ride Schemes that have been established elsewhere. After all, the Rail Authorities and their shareholders make substantial profits, the people that are increasingly drawn to Gatley to use the railway have the convenience of free parking on our roads, but what do the residents here get from it? Nothing that I can see except a lot of problems and inconvenience. Also, the problem is likely to grow so some long-term plan needs to be developed.

Ironic really that just yesterday when I passed through the station car park, that all the cars parallel parked on the platform side had been given tickets. As there are no visible restrictions I can only assume these are for not using the spaces provided (clearly questionable offences given the circumstances).
Do Network Rail not realise that these people are using their facility and getting on a train. Its not as if they were parking there to go shopping in the village. They were not even blocking the other vehicles. This is just another attack on the motorist and it is Network Rail’s own customers! A money making scheme.
No doubt these same car drivers will now abandon the car park and find a space with a rather more flexible (and free) option – the surrounding residential streets.
Who is making up these rules? Obviously Network Rail are not in the loop here!
