Cheadle Area Committee, Tuesday 22nd November 2011

by Lib Dem team on 14 November, 2011

Next Tuesday (22nd November) is the latest Area Committee meeting. As usual, the meeting starts at 6pm in the Upper Rooms above Tesco in Cheadle (access from the car park). All are welcome, and there are opportunities to ask questions of police, council officers and councillors.

In this meeting we will be looking at the Local Development Framework – Allocations Development Plan – which suggests possible uses for different parcels of land to help guide future developments. This is important.

Unfortunately, misinformation put out by the Conservatives has worried a lot of people into thinking that travellers’ sites are being proposed.

No travellers’ sites are being proposed. If any are in the future, you can sure that the Lib Dems will be at the very front, campaigning for residents.

This is about saying what sorts of development might be suitable for different parts of our area in the future – for example, would we be happy with housing on the former Tatton site? What about light industrial use on Cheadle Royal? What would our view be if John Lewis sold up and wanted to convert their store into a lot of smaller units, which might then compete with Cheadle, Gatley, Cheadle Hulme and Heald Green?

We have two planning applications – one relating to the Cheadle home of the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq – and both of which planning officers are recommending we grant.

Additionally, there will be discussion of the Council’s draft parking strategy, which looks at how we can best provide car parks, on-road parking, parking enforcement and the like across Stockport Borough.

I would vote for housing on the Tatton eyesore – I would vote for offices – I would vote for shops – I would vote for a car park. In fact anything reasonable (apart from a travellers site!)

  2. Paula Isherwood says:

Can’t be there tomorrow but would vote for housing or offices. Don’t think we need any more shops as we can’t fill the ones we have, unless we can have an M & S! or is this pie in the sky? Bit worried about a car park with cars coming and going in/off Gatley Road very near to the crossing at Old Hall Road.

  3. Frederick Kenny says:

Well of course there are no actual proposals for travellers sites in our immediate area, this is stage one so they can get the process going.

Sounds ominous – Brookfield Road (Park?) in particular. Mick Jones has brought this to peoples attention and should be congratulated.

Political correctness on this type of issue by the Lib Dems is worrying.

  4. Iain Roberts says:

No. We need to be absolutely clear on this. It is NOT stage one to get the process going.

This is something we have to do to get the plan approved by central Government – no more.

Where we’ve had traveller problems in the past, the Lib Dems have been absolutely committed to sorting them out, and we will continue to fight for residents in the future.

But we will not mislead residents in this way.

  5. Clare Tisdall says:

I would be absolutely against any traveller sites in this area. It would not be fair to put them in a residential area. there is plenty of fields in this country to house these people.

  6. Mrs P says:

I wouldn’t mind housing on the former Tatton cinema site as long as it was appropriate housing similar to those large semi detached or detached dwellings nearby (not council housing and DEFINITELY not a travellers site.)

It would be nice if Tatton could be brought back into use as a theatre or maybe a gym but we would not be opposed to the right type of housing development there.
