Gatley Rec Ground – footpath to be repaired

by Lib Dem team on 31 January, 2012

Following pressure from the Lib Dems, the main path through Gatley Rec Ground will be properly repaired with work starting in the next few weeks.

The tennis and basketball courts also need repairing, and the aim is to do those in the next financial year (2012/13).

The Recreation Ground is a well-used, and well-loved local resource all year round, with its childrens’ playground, skateboard ramps (used by all ages), football pitch, tennis court and basketball court, plus the adjoining bowling green.

It’s excellent news that such an important resource for the local community will get this work done.

Whilst it is easy to applaud this obviously positive action, I do wonder if there are mis-placed priorities in getting this work done.
Last Tuesday, my 93 year old mother had a fall on the pavement sited on the newsagents side of Chapel Street, Cheadle. Whilst she was not badly injured, she was badly bruised and still is suffering the stiffness associated with such injuries. I was with her and clearly saw the large ‘lump’ in the pavement, which would have tripped me so please it had nothing to do with her ‘being old.’
This section of pavement has been in this state of neglect for YEARS, but you see the priority to repair a path in a “well-loved local resource all year round”. People have a choice to walk through Gatley rec, or not, but “all ages” should have a right to walk with some degree of safety.
You will politely write back and explain there is a formula for prioritising these works within a well controlled budget. Please don’t bother because I simply do not believe it.

Steve, although I hear what your saying with this incident. There is a degree of accidental nature involved in this action, can you serious expect our Councilor to be going round inspecting every different ‘lump’ and crack that appears on every street?
I would not argue against you, apart from that you are holding this over the ‘misplaced priorities’ as you call, that I feel strongly needs resolving.
The Gatley Basketball courts are in a disgraceful state and talking to Ian Roberts now, coming from a National League Basketball player that currently represents this area, and that uses the court on a regular basis as a source of fitness and related training, its about time they were improved, not just a relayed court, but new nets as well, as the current ones are poor excuses. It was an injustice when first then introduced a new skate spot without improving the nets, then creating a kids play area and again missing out the court so this also has been a ‘state of neglect for YEARS’. I having the foggiest clue how you could play tennis on the extremely uneven ground as it’s hard enough bouncing a ball!
These both are items that probably need sorting but I feel it is an injustice that Mr Whitaker believes the courts should take a back seat to an his mother’s accident, that although unfortunate, isn’t a usual occurrence. So if there is a decision of the two, look on the GatleyNet.co.uk forums, you will see others agree with my statement. This WILL be a positive action that will benefit all residence of Gatley.
    Thank you.
