How Stockport became a top five national recycler

by Lib Dem team on 3 July, 2012

Stockport is currently the fifth best recycler in the country – and the best Metropolitan borough by some margin. That’s not only good for the environment – it also saves us millions of pounds a year. When we send rubbish from our 100,000 homes to landfill, it costs us money. When we recycle it, it either costs a lot less or makes us money.

The presentation below shows how and why Stockport recycles the way it does – and has a useful reminder of what goes in which bin and what the collection rules are.

I have still not finished my pale green plastic bags from last year, never mind starting on the white ones. Is there any way I can preventing receiving a further installment in November? I know that I am not the only one.

  2. Iain Roberts says:

Hi Paula – I assume you’ve reported it to the Council. I’ll chase it up.

  3. Paula Isherwood says:

No, I haven’t reported it. Who needs to know please?

  4. Les Leckie says:

I’ll take the green ones. They’re much better than the white ones. Only joking, but we should be proud of the standard we are setting. Wish we could do something about metal lids, old screws, etc. Why can’t it go in brown bin? Metal is too valuable to go to landfill.

I have heard from various people that, although Stockport residents are excellent at recycling, Stockport council sends all the plastic recycled stuff to China where it is dumped into landfill! This is to make the council’s figures look good.

  6. Iain Roberts says:

    Hi Jennifer,

You’ve been misinformed. Stockport is able to recycle most plastic bottles and they are recycled – not dumped in landfill abroad!

Other plastics can’t currently be recycled, either by us or anyone else, as there’s simply no market for them. These do go to landfill, but not in China (and they don’t count towards our recycling percentage of course).

If anyone wants to see for themselves how it all works and cut through some of the myths, there are visitor days at the Longley Lane eco-centre in the school holidays which I can firmly recommend.

  7. Paula Isherwood says:

I’ve contacted the council about too many green bags but they don’t want to know. It seems it is another firm who delivers the bags and it is easier to let them deliver to every home.

Agree that the eco-centre at Longley Lane is excellent and they are a mine of information about where our rubbish finally goes.
