No progress on Abney Hall development

by Lib Dem team on 5 July, 2012

Back in April we told you about the proposals for a new care home behind Abney Hall in Cheadle – to be run by Care UK.

We just wanted to update you – as we all start wondering what’s going on when things go quiet.

As of this week, no planning application has been received by the Council relating to this site, and as far as we can tell, no discussions have taken place with the Council about it.

The Lib Dem councillors in Cheadle Hulme North (the ward that Abney Hall is in) and Cheadle & Gatley will be keeping a close eye on developments and keeping you informed.

Iain, surely it can be developed as a tourist attraction? In its own way it is as artichecturally interesting – and important as Bramhall, yet although Bramhall has thousands lavished on it, we seem to have given it away to Bruntwood. There is no reason to suggest that the annexe could not be rented out as office as with EDS. this will give a presence on site.
Basically I don’t sense the same commitment to Abney that the council is giving to Bramhall.

  2. Iain Roberts says:

Abney Hall and Bramall Hall are clearly very different – not least in age. I can’t comment on the decisions taken in past decades, though if I had to pick one of the two I guess it would be hard to argue against Bramall Hall.

Sometimes Councils have to make the choice to do one thing well, rather than two things badly and that may the case here.

Blighty, it was once said by Napoleon 1 be “a nation of shopkeepers”.
Mefears we are becoming “a nation of museum keeprs” !
Solution ? sell Abney Hall (or has it been) and hope that the new owners can find an economic use for it. As fine a building as it it be – it does not compare with Bramhall Hall or Lyme Hall.

  4. Paula Isherwood says:

As far as I understand it isn’t the Hall which Care UK wish to redevelop at the moment it is the site of the offices. You may remember in April that this part of Abney was, if permission was given by the Council, going to be extended and developed into a large nursing home and the main problem at that time was the amount of car parking said to be required, which was far from the actual number of car parking places which would really be needed.

Volunteers at Abney were very concerned that this would be the start of a much bigger take over of Abney park by Care UK in the future.

  5. Alan Gent says:

It may not compare directly to Bramhall or Lyme, but it’s interior is magnificent and it’s Cheadle’s- or are we not allowed an attraction of our own?

  6. Iain Roberts says:

I don’t think it has anything to do with who’s allowed what, Alan – just the reality of where we are now and what can be afforded from taxpayers’ money.

  7. David Johnson says:

The Hall is a building but any “development” would require approval of land use for road access, car parking etc. etc.. The land area is one of the few in the locality available for recreation and is far more precious than currency! Over past years some has already gone to “developers” for large houses and a school. Please prevent further deterioration.

  8. S Smith says:

Sounds like a done deal, we all know how dodgy councils are, just look at the mainstream government, anything for money with no regard for local life and communities, perhaps that’s why less and less people vote! Another planned development in a part of England with a similar number of old peoples beds anticipate over 200 vehicle movements a day once that care home is built, so watch out kids, walkers, cyclists, dogs and dog walkers as there’s going to be a whole lot of traffic, noise and pollution heading your way!
