Cashless parking comes to Stockport – and Cheadle

by Lib Dem team on 25 August, 2012

Cashless parking in StockportYou can now pay for your parking in any Stockport Council car park – or on street parking – without needing to have any change on you at all – and you can easily extend your stay without having to go back to your car.

Stockport has introduced cashless parking. You’ll still be able to use pay & display – putting coins into the machine and getting a ticket out.

Partnering with Ringgo, Stockport Council now allows you to

  • Call 0203 046 0010 from your phone to pay
  • Send a text message to pay for parking or to extend your stay
  • Download the Ringgo app for iPhone or Android and pay for parking through that
  • Pay for parking in advance, extend your stay and download VAT receipts

Anywhere you currently pay Stockport Council for parking, you can now use RingGo.  That includes the car parks not only in the Town Centre but Cheadle, Edgeley, Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Hazel Grove, Compstall, Heaton Moor, Marple, Marple Bridge, Romiley and also Bruntwood Park, Bramhall Park and Etherow Country Park.  It also includes on-street parking.

The full list of car parking locations (on and off street) is here.

Either before or at the time that you first use the system, you need to register with RingGo – letting them know the registration number, colour and make for each of your cars, plus your payment info and mobile number.  If you’re reading this, it’s probably easiest to register online whenever you’ve a couple of minutes spare.

After that, it’s pretty simple: by phoning, texting, using the web or the smartphone app, you simply book your parking (in advance if you like).  Each car park has its own code, which you can see on the smartphone app, or on stickers attached to the pay & display machines.

So no more need to remember your change to park in Stockport. No need even to go to the Pay & Display machine, or to dash back to your car because your time’s nearly up.

Well that sounds like an improvement. I always resent the fact that the parking machines don’t give change bur gracefully accept overpayment. I would at least have thought a card park the size of Merseyway would support a manned booth for payment upon leaving.

It might be cashless, but you still have to pay. I object to paying anything just to nip into the bank or buy a loaf of bread. Small shopping areas like Cheadle are losing trade because they charge for parking. Simple as that. As I have said repeatedly, there should be 30 minutes free parking in Cheadle and other such areas. Edgeley has loads of free parking. It is free to park in Gatley, Sainsburys and all the other large supermarkets. If small villages are to compete, they have to remove short-term parking charges.

    Hi Karen,

We’re pleased that there’s no shortage of free short-term parking in Cheadle within a couple of minutes walk of the village centre – for example on Ashfield Road, Oak Road and Old Rectory Gardens.

I am a carer in the community but also do office hours now, if I pay for a full day on the car park and have to nip out to do some care calls do I have to pay again when I get back? For instance today iv paid for 4 hours parking because I have to nip out to do some care calls, I will them be coming back to the office so will then pay again, whereas if I just paid for 9 hours could I come and go?

Hi Diane , as far as I know, you can pay once and come and go (assuming it’s not a car park with barriers like Merseyway). The council doesn’t check who enters and leaves the car park, the traffic wardens just check the parked cars to make sure they have paid.
