Back to netball in action

by Lib Dem team on 28 February, 2013

I had a great time visiting the Back to Netball session at the Cheadle & Marple College (Cheadle Campus) this evening.

Back to Netball is an open session for women of all ages. When I went along this evening there were about 20 ladies in the sports hall at Cheadle and Marple College in Cheadle. Some were there for the first time, some had been coming for a few weeks or months. Everyone was having fun, keeping active and playing a fun game of netball.

Amy O’Brien, the Netball Development Community Coach for Stockport and Trafford explains:

In Stockport since April 2012, 156 new participants have been to a Back to Netball session. Current sessions in the Stockport area are Monday’s at Stockport Sport for All Centre in Reddish, Wednesday’s at Life Leisure Houldsworth Village and Life Leisure Avondale and Thursday’s at Cheadle 6th Form college (which you have kindly advertised in your newsletter). All sessions follow the same format, allowing ladies to have fun, whilst improving fitness and playing sport in a more social environment.

Our number one priority is raising the profile of netball locally whilst giving women the opportunity to start playing a sport that they once loved again! Women attend sessions for a variety of reasons, whether they’ve moved area and want to meet new people, are returning to activity after having a baby, want to get more active but aren’t keen on the gym environment or simply because they haven’t played netball for 10,15 or 20+ years and want to start playing again. The structure of the sessions means that whenever women can/want to attend a session they do, we operate on a pay and play basis so no contracts and no paying up front. We try to set up sessions in areas and at times that suit our participants needs to enable them to incorporate netball into their weekly routine.
