Cheadle Area Committee agenda, 9th April 2013

by Lib Dem team on 28 March, 2013

We’ve got a busy Area Committee meeting coming up – we’ll be starting the meeting at 6pm on Tuesday 9th Apil 2013 at Bolshaw Primary School, Cross Road, Heald Green.

The agenda includes:

  • Planning applications to convert old office block behind Abney Hall to an 80-bed care home, upgrade the car park and add pedestrian paths
  • Two-storey extension at 51 Firswood Mount, Gatley (residential)
  • Report on the possible introduction of Play Streets into Stockport – for consultation
  • Report on proposed changes to parking tarrifs to 20p/hour in District Centres and 80p/hour in Stockport Town Centre.  I reported on this last week.
  • Report on proposed changes to residents’ parking schemes, to ask residents with schemes to cover their costs and also have most schemes near District Centres allwing one hour free public parking during the daytime.  Again, I reported on this last week.
  • Improvements for St. Ann’s Road North including putting bollards on the pavement by chicanes to stop drivers going round the wrong side of the chicane.
  • Application from Manchester Harriers to use Scholes Fields for next year’s cross country races (as they have done for decades).
  • Makers market to be held on Cheadle Green, 6th May and organised by Cheadle Civic Society

  1. Margaret Cummins says:

What has the Mary Portas initiative (and grant money) achieved in Stockport because I can see no improvements and the mersey square area and precinct area still looks dreary and hotchpotch. . But like Cheadle really. Perhaps it’s all still at planning stage.

  2. Iain Roberts says:

Hi Margaret – you’re right – the Portas initiative was never aimed at Mersey Square and Merseyway. It’s £100,000 and it will take millions to improve those areas.

The Portas initiative is aimed at improving the Market and Underbanks areas. To give a couple of examples of improvements, we’ve had 29 new shops open up in the last year or so, mostly independents in the underbanks area. We’ve got a specialist Sunday market on more often than not. We’re making practical improvements to the covered market building and the food hall.

There’s a lot more happening, but big redevelopments of buildings and open spaces cost a lot more and take a good deal more time.

  3. Lucy says:

Hi, are there any plans to put in a filter light to turn right out of cheadle at the gatley lights?

  4. Iain Roberts says:

    Hi Lucy,

This is something we’ve been working on for some years. There doesn’t look to be any chance of a right filter as the modelling done suggests it would lead to much longer queues on other traffic movements so the Highways Agency and TfGM have always said no.

However, we are working to bring in some other changes that should improve the situation a little.

Fundamentally, there is simply a lot of traffic using the junction and no timing change or filtering is going to change that – almost any change that makes it better for one traffic movement will make it worse for others.

So we’re also looking at longer term solutions, but that’s in the early stages.

  5. concerned resident says:

I speak on behalf of myself and many, many deeply saddened and concerned Chedlians who are adamently opposed to inappropriate development in Abney Hall Park and Grounds, a nature reserve, a site of special biological interest and of course the childhood retreat of Agatha Christie, recipiant of Prince Albert, Benjamin Disrali, but to name a few.
Abney is a splendid UNSPOILT AND UNDEVELOPED haven for Cheadle. Please do not allow big money and business to buy Cheadle’s nature reservce, this benefits Big Business and Not Cheadle residents who will NOT be catered for under this proposal. ( see Care Home UK’s materials) Care Home UK are a bad employer ( see there poor references by staff ) and will take over the lease for the hall and do Heaven knows what with it should this development go ahead.
Work for Cheadle and Not for outside money. Say No to Care Home UK and save our kids retreat, out bats and watervowls home ( protected species, ignored in 20 min site visit by Care Home UK) and SAVE ABNEY HALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
