Cheadle’s telephone exchange building to get a makeover

by Lib Dem team on 24 April, 2013

In Cheadle village we’ve seen a new building on the High Street – a Sainsbury’s on the Ground Floor with apartments above.

Unusually for a new build, it’s been met with almost universal approval and the most common comment we’ve had is “The new building looks great, but can’t you get something done with the telephone exchange next door”.

Quite right – the telephone exchange (correctly called “Gatley ATE”) really lets down the High Street.

We’ve been pursuing this on two fronts – the building itself and the pavement outside.

It’s now been confirmed that the building will be getting a bit of a facelift over the next 12 months. Repairs will be made to the structure, and the facia improved. BT will also clean out the old posters and tidy up the windows.

We’re also going to get the pavement in front of the Exchange building improved as part of the wider improvements to Gatley Village.

There is nothing unusual with “Good Architecture” getting the thumbs up from the majority and Igloo and the developers should be applauded for their efforts.

Good news about the telecom building ,its a start with them but please do not let them get away with a token tickle over, the residents of Cheadle have put a lot of money into BT over the years and now we need you the Councillors to get the best deal back for us.

I’d like to see BT roll out their fast broadband to this area. They have it in Stockport and a couple of other surrounding areas, but it is still “awaited in 2013” here. Unless the works on the High Street today (Sunday, in front of the White Hart)are anything to do with it? I liked it when I saw the space in front of the Exchange being used by the primary school choir for a charity fundraiser. It was all that community spirit should be, and as that space is right in the middle of the Village it really worked.
