Mark Hunter’s Notes from Westminster

by Lib Dem team on 3 June, 2013

Dear Resident,

Welcome to the latest edition of my Notes from Westminster.

Earlier this month, we had the state opening of Parliament (and, of course, the Queen’s Speech) where the Coalition Government’s programme of measures were set forward. I welcomed a number of measures announced, particularly those that will help support local businesses, carers and pensioners.

The announcement that the Government are set to reform the care system to make it more affordable was in timely fashion before Carers Week. I went along to a special campaign event in Westminster to highlight the tireless dedication of carers across the country, and discuss how the Government can help.

I had one of my regular meetings with senior local police officers, and discussed the good news that anti-social behaviour across Greater Manchester is on the decline.

Stockport Council has announced it will be adopting an armed forces “community covenant”, which seeks to establish a commitment of care to service personnel, their families and veterans. I’ve supported the community covenant campaign, led by the Royal British Legion, for some time now and I strongly welcomed this commitment.

I went along to see the Together Trust’s local services and was so impressed. This fantastic local charity is doing so much in our community.

The South Manchester MS Society branch celebrated their 60th anniversary and I was delighted to be invited along as a special guest to support the event. The MS Society has been as been providing information and support, funding research and fighting for change since 1953.

After helping with a visa issue, it was a pleasure to join Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club in welcoming Milly and Albert for a special visit from Uganda as part of their “village project.” The Rotary Club do some fantastic work in the community and it is fantastic that they are sharing their skills and ideas with those less fortunate.

At a House of Commons campaigns event I supported a special campaign to raise awareness of how parents can check their children for early warning signs of potential heart problems.

I joined with local postmasters to launch the newly refurbed Bramhall Post Office and, finally, I joined with other local MPs Andrew Stunell and John Leech to highlight Local Newspaper Week, which this year was focused on the importance of press freedom.

Thank you for reading and, as always, do let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Best wishes,

Mark Hunter MP

  1. Robert Taggart says:

The Queens speech – all well and good – but for the opening of each session ?
Time for some savings – The Gracious speech should be but once every FIVE years – for the opening of each new term. Now that ‘we’ have legislated for fixed five year term parliaments – this should not be difficult.

As for all those holidays your lot enjoy – DO NOT GET ME STARTED !
