Polling day for local elections is traditionally the first Thursday in May. For 2014 it’s being moved to Thursday 22nd May so the local and European elections can be held on the same day.
For anyone with children at Gatley Primary School, Thursday 22nd May is likely to be an inset day (as the school normally closes to pupils to act as a polling station). The Kingsway School hosts two polling stations, but stays open.
Local elections
Cheadle and Gatley ward has a population of about 14,500 and elects three councillors to Stockport Council.
Each year we elect one councillor, who stays on the Council for four years. One year out of four we don’t have elections (and that’s 2013).
Pam King won the election in 2011 (and so is elected to 2015). Keith Holloway won in 2012 (and is a councillor until 2016).
Next year Iain Roberts is up for election. Elections in Cheadle and Gatley are always close contests between the Lib Dems and the Tories, with the other parties well behind (if they stand candidates at all).
European elections
The European elections will be on the same day as the local elections next year. The North West will elect 8 Euro-MPs. We each get one vote and we vote for a party rather than a candidate, so the more votes each party gets, the more Euro-MPs they get.
The Lib Dem Euro-MP is Chris Davies, who is based in Edgeley and works hard to get the best deal from Europe.
