Mother and son robbed at knifepoint in Gatley Tesco

by Lib Dem team on 20 September, 2013

A very nasty crime in the car park at Gatley Tesco on Thursday early evening – a mother and son robbed at knifepoint. I heard about it on Facebook and, having spoken to the officer investigating the crime on Friday morning, was able to update the group with the facts.

As the Manchester Evening News reports:

A mother and child were robbed at knife-point during a car-jacking outside a supermarket.

The robbery happened after the 42-year-old victim left the Tesco Express on Church Road in Gatley with her six-year-old son at around 7.30pm last night (Thursday).

As they left the store they were followed to their black Ford Galaxy by the offender.

After they got in the robber then got into the passenger seat and held a knife to mum’s throat.

He demanded her cash and a mobile phone, which she handed over.

He then ordered the mum, her son and their family dog out of the car and drove off in the direction of Styal Road.

The car then crashed into another vehicle on its way out of the car park.

It was recovered in Nearbrook Road, Benchill.

The offender is described as white in his late 20s, taller than 5ft 9in, with a slim build, clean shaven, with green or blue eyes, Manchester accent wearing a black beanie or woolly hat and a black or dark blue jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 9770 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

This is a vile and cowardly crime – please do contact the Police if you have any information that might help catch the robber.

As ever, we need to remember that crime has fallen over 50% in the last decade. Crimes still happen, and nasty crimes still happen, but we’re safer from crime now than we have been for over thirty years (even if, thanks to the internet, we often know more about local crimes now than we used to!).

Oneself heard some ‘comotion’ – above the telly – alas, was none the wiser until earlier today.

Ended up in Wythy ? – no surprise there – council estate scum no doubt.

  2. Danielle says:

I work in that Tesco and although I defiantly do no condone what happened to this poor woman I am not accepting the comment about us “council estate scum” I too live in Wythenshawe. I work 2 jobs in gatley and there is more crime there than anywhere I have worked. You can’t keep assuming that every bad thing that happens in that area comes from Wythenshawe. There are a LOT of good people that live in Wythenshawe as I am sure there is everywhere, but there are also “scum” from gatley too. However in sure “oneself” would not agree!!

  3. Iain Roberts says:

    Agree 100% Danielle.

  4. Rob J says:

Some chav in reebok classic and pants tucked in his socks no doubt, the scourge of Gatley!
Undoubtedly if the scum was caught he will only end up on a tag and politely asked to do several hours of community service.
Surely if scum like this break the law then they should not be protected by the law…
My sympathies to the victims in this, I only hope that the security cameras managed to catch the cowards face and that he severely injured himself during his crash, preferably a ruptured pancreas.

  5. Robert Taggart says:

Danielle. Ofcourse there some good folks in Wythy – just not that many ! As for the crime in Gatley – indeed – there be too much. A situation which has not improved with the election of three LieDum councillors ! Where do most of the crims’ come from though ? – WYTHY !

Councillor. Are there no depths to which you will not stoop in order to be ‘popular’ ? !

  6. Danielle says:

Well mind my language but its like the old saying “you don’t shit on your own door step” there is way too much crime anywhere if you ask me, people need to realise if you do bad things bad things happen, we can agree on one thing, the only who is scum is he who did this and I hope they don’t take punishment lightly!

  7. Robert Taggart says:

    Agree 100% Danielle !

  8. road user says:

And where was the Tesco security guard in all this…stacking shelves? I hope the poor family recovers from what must have been a very scary ordeal.

  9. Jean Skitt says:

Good and bad everywhere – there are far more decent people in Wythenshawe than the other sort – its just that if you live there – sadly some people tar you with the same brush – and that should not happen – I got the same when I lived on the Anson !!!!

  10. John Hartley says:

    Agreed, Jean.

Those of us who have long-standing family connections with Wythenshawe (mine go back to the early 1900s) know that the vast majority of folk there are decent hard-working people who just want what the rest of us want from life. Only snobs and people with an axe to grind want to tar whole communities with the same brush. Says more about them than about the folk they are trying to tar, in my experience.

Hopefully the family will come to terms with being victims of this. It will always be difficult to “get over” being at the end of a violent crime. Memories are unlikely ever to leave you. Thankfully, our criminal justice system treats violent offenders more seriously than, say, 40 – 50 years ago and, if they catch this criminal, he’s likely to be behind bars for a goodly while.

  11. Robert Taggart says:

JH – the arch-liberal – wondered where you disappeared to !
Guessing those many years you spent ‘in Probation’ accounts for your latest ‘apology’ for the criminals !!
As for our criminal justice system treating these scum more seriously nowadays – you must be on another planet – there be no Birch, Cat and Nine Tails nor even the Stocks !!!
It does indeed – say more about you !!!!

  12. John Hartley says:

I hardly think that suggesting, as I did, that this offender is likely to spend a goodly time in prison amounts to an “apology” for him.

And, as for a comparison between sentencing practice now compared to 40 – 50 years ago, the facts are readily available.

However, don’t the facts get in the way of your prejudices, Mr Taggart.
