Watch out for Council Tax scam

by Lib Dem team on 9 January, 2014

Quite a few local residents have contacted us, having received plausible-sounding phone calls from a company saying that they are due a refund on overpaid council tax.

This is a scam.

You cannot get a refund on past council tax.

If you want to get your council tax band checked, you can do it without having to pay a company.  However, you should only consider it if you’re very confident that your band is too high, as the valuers will more often than not actually find that houses are in too low a band, meaning the householder ends up with a higher tax bill!

Most of us would simply settle for a freeze !
Even your ‘leader’ – Calamity Clegg – supports that !!

  2. Harry Bull says:

    Dear Robert Taggart
If you haven’t noticed — there has been a CT freeze for 2 years

  3. T says:

THE NAME OF THE COMPANY IS ‘ Dalton & Dalton ‘

  4. Bruce thwaite says:

Last year there was another above average increase – ever since the LibDems have been in power in Stockport the increase has ALWAYS above the national average. The year before the council tax freeze we had an increase of 3.4% which was more than DOUBLE the national average. Mark Hunter said ‘at least it is less than inflation’

  5. Robert Taggart says:

HB – with ‘innocents’ like you for voters – it be no wonder the LieDums still ‘rule our roost’ !

  6. John says:

The name of this company would be nice? Why didn’t he include it?

  7. Iain Roberts says:

John – any company making these sorts of claims is scamming. I wouldn’t want to give anyone the impression that they only need to watch out for one company name.

Robert – stay classy, my friend.

  8. John says:

I agree with you on that but to publish such a warning without a name is a bit silly. It would be like a supermarket putting up a sign for a product recall without giving the product name/brand.

  9. Iain Roberts says:

I’ve had no information to suggest that the people carrying out this scam always identify themselves as from that one company – I really don’t want to mislead people into thinking that if a certain company name isn’t mentioned it might be legit.

Whatever name they give, anyone claiming to get you a council tax refund is scamming you.
