Watch out for card cloners

by Lib Dem team on 1 April, 2014

I’ve had a report of a debit card being grabbed by a cash machine and cloned in Gatley – presumably with some bit of kit added on to do it. The victim then had hundreds of pounds stolen from their account.

Keep an eye out for anything that looks odd or out of place on cash machines, and if the machine keeps your card, phone the bank right away. If it has been stolen, the bank may only refund your money from the time you informed them.

And always check your statements for transactions. I found a dodgy one on my credit card statement only this week.

The “bit of kit” is apparently called a “Lebanese Loop”. There are different versions but, essentially, they work the same. It’s a simple device which the crooks slot into the card hole. It prevents the card being ejected, which triggers the ATM to issue an on-screen message saying the card has been retained. Once the customer has left the vicinity, the crooks quickly remove the Loop and the card. Google indicates there are a number of not very obvious ways in which they can observe the customer entering their PIN.
